Blues trade Jake Allen to Montreal

Allen had 1 year left on his deal with a AAV of $4.35mil.

Habs get a quality back-up so Price doesn't have to play 81 games. St. Louis opens up some room for Pietrangelo.

Holy crap Jake Allen had a .927 save percentage this season??? In just 24 games but still who would have expected that.

Wait, goalies are that cheap

*whispers very, very, very, very, very, very quietly*: I woulda considered doing that trade

um yeah. It was only 1 year left and Jake Allen is 30 and has a history of badness, but still.

14.85M in goaltending next season for the Habs.

Yeah, that's some interesting use of cap space.

Still leaves them with about $12-14mil in cap space with only Domi left to re-sign. And despite his recent agent change after the season he had he's not getting a massive deal.

Weird landing spot, considering the cap, but, reasonable value in terms of assets. Montreal has some cap space to play with, but a big chunk of that is likely required to re-sign Max Domi and Victor Mete.

Should note too considering how compressed next season will likely be teams having two capable goalies is going to be very important.

So you'd dump Freddie for a 3rd rounder and get Allen as a replacement so we could save 650K?

Their "playoff" appearance aside, they are supposed to be rebuilding a bit here too so it isn't like they need to go out and sign a bunch of guys in the offseason to try and be ultra competitive.  It's one year for Allen and its a guy you hopefully feel comfortable enough to let Price not play 65 games with or whatever the equivalent is going to be during the compressed season.

Who said anything about trading Freddy for a 3rd?
Curious then. What would expect Freddie to get? You must feel that Allen wouldn't be much, if any of a downgrade to make such a move and he basically brought in a 3rd. Leafs can't keep both.

I'm not sure their management team feels that way - especially since they're not getting that really high 1st rounder this season that they seemed destined for pre-pandemic. And, if they did, why would they give up assets for a backup goalie when they can likely sign someone good enough to be the backup on a rebuilding team in the UFA market?

i have always found Bergevin a strange one... ( see Sergachev for Drouin,, )... i guess this will help them make the playoffs because of more wins from the back-up goalie... but Price will get every playoff start barring injury... and Allen will be on the bench earning $4.5... must be nice to have cap space....

You said it, make the playoffs. Also like the Leafs, their backup last year sucked. Habs have lots of cap space and an excess of picks. They may turn around and trade Allen, who knows at this point. Players also don't get paid in the playoffs.

This is a very interesting take...I hadn't thought of that.

It's a great point and the Leafs will be leaning on Campbell a lot next season.
