COL trades Kyle Quincey to TB for Downie.

TSNBobMcKenzie: I am now hearing TB has traded Kyle Quincey to DET. Working on details but sounds like Quincey to DET for a first-round pick. Verifying.

Quincey maybe back where it all started for him?

Interesting... New thread?

Is it really worth it? This seems more like a 3-way deal - it just took a while for the details to leak out.

Maybe not... I just changed the title... So Yzerman spins Downie into a 1st round pick... Not to shabby.

Unless they pick one up along the way, this will be the 8th time in the last 12 drafts that Detroit will not have a pick in the 1st round.

I guess Holland knows what he's doing but isn't a first round pick for Quincey just a little loopy?

Based on what I've been reading about this coming draft, I don't know. Word is the talent drop off after the first 10-12 players is very significant.

Okey dokey then... Though I've kind of stopped reading what the "experts" say about how deep drafts are. I find these guys to be for the most part, akin to weather men.

Lightning fans are pissed that they only got a 1st for Downie (the prospect sounds like nothing).  Perhaps it's because I can't stand him, but my initial reaction was that it's a very good deal for Tampa.  :-[

Cue the obligatory "Well if Downie can fetch a 1st and a prospect, how is Grabovski only worth a 2nd and a prospect?"

That's true, though, much like weather men, they become much more accurate the closer it gets to crunch time.

I'm actually a little surprised Tampa flipped Quincey to Detroit. When the initial trade went down I thought it was a very good move for them. Tampa's blueline is brutal right now, particularly with Kubina gone. I suppose the allure of a 1st round pick may have gotten to them, but if Yzerman can't shore up that defence this summer he might regret that move.

I agree. It seems kind of weird when Tampa does have a pretty good young core to build around that you wouldn't add to the area of weakness but instead go for the kind of asset you can get in the 24-30 spots. Not a bad asset to have, I suppose though.

All I can think is the contract numbers weren't making sense for either player to Stevie Y and that having another 1st to go along with the 2nd and 4th from Kubina's deal made more sense on balance.
