Adam LaRoche

I'm coming into this story a bit late, but Adam LaRoche gave a fairly open interview that was published back in April this year.

You might remember him as the guy who gave up a $13M contract and chose to retire because his son was no longer welcome in the clubhouse.

This is a crazy story.

I think that's dumb to give up a contract just because your son isn't allowed at your place of work.  You don't see parents bringing their kid to a car factory?  Yes 2 totally different things but when you're being paid that much, the team expects some sort of professionalism from their employees.  His ego got the best of him there.

EDIT:  I guess he was already 36 when he retired so he made enough money.  But still my comment stands.

Yeah, that was a weird one. I definitely think the White Sox were right but it seems to have been an unpopular decision on the team and after Chris Sale's latest nonsense, and he was outspoken about being pro-Laroche, you wonder if it's done more harm than good.

In a 2% GIC $13M would give you $260K. I could live comfortably off that and so could his kid. I don't know how athletes justify leaving $ on the table regardless of how much money they have made. Suck it up and bank it for your family. That's a boat load of money and he's only 36.

He also didn't play it for the love of the game.  I get it, he's a family guy.  But $13M could be passed down to his 2 kids like you said.

I always figured the point of making huge amounts of money was that you didn't then have to make decisions based on making more.

Laroche made 70+ million in his career, his kids will be fine.

Maybe the timeline wasn't laid out clearly in the article, but his decision to leave the game behind was primarily precipitated by his mission work in south east Asia.

Kinda. If you read Deadspin's coverage of it things get a little murkier. I think the article you linked is seen very much as being overly Laroche-friendly.

I thought I read that the Sox said he could have his son in the clubhouse when he join them as a free agent, and then after one season they said it had to stop.

It's kind of a muddled deal but the way I understand it is that the White Sox said he could have his kid around thinking it would be the way lots of guys have their kids around at certain times but objected when they realized he meant essentially having the kid as another team member, going to away games and being around at all hours.

And if I remember correctly they didn't necessarily say "stop bringing the kid", just "stop bringing him literally everywhere".

There was also a report that said some of his teammates were starting to complain about it.

Fair point. I was posting primarily for the part where he helped out with Exodus Road.

Here's the article you referenced, which is also an interesting read: http://deadspin.com/espns-insane-adam-laroche-puff-piece-features-laroche-l-1770710009

To be quite blunt, when I first heard of this story the first thing that ran through my mind without knowing any of the details was wondering if Drake was a special needs kid who needed to be around so he could be given extra attention to.

I'm conflicted on the whole situation.  On one hand, I'm all for the father/son constant bonding, and I'm sure it was great for both Adam and Drake to be around each other as often as they were.  On the other, unless Drake was the bat boy and/or shagging fly balls, I don't see a clubhouse being used on a consistent basis by more than the players, coaches, trainers and reporters.
