    Carlyle Extended/Randy's Revenge

Because a competent coach is capable of coaching virtually any system asked of him.  They seem to believe Carlyle is competent and capable of changing what he's coaching and executing it.

    Komorov - back to NHL?

Offer him $2 mil and hand him the 4th line centre job. He's a much better player than McClement.

Phaneuf to Oilers (fair warning - it's Eklund)

Agreed, if there were no other changes to it and we went with the remaining six.  Move Dion and I think there will be much more of an overhaul than just subtracting him.

    Phaneuf being shopped

Yeah you are probably right. But if you dropped him on a team like say the Sharks, they have such a well established veteran leadership group that I think it would keep him in check vs. what he did here which was walk in the dressing room on day 1 and basically took over. edit: Now if you...
  5. Corn Flake

    Phaneuf being shopped

Very true, but he also should be on a team where he is not the captain, or even in the leadership group it will benefit him.

    Phaneuf being shopped

I guarantee you there are GM's and coaches who look at Dion and think they can tweak his game and pair him with the right guy and make him flourish.  Heck, maybe putting him back on the left side and pair him with a competent RH d-man does the trick.

    Phaneuf being shopped

O'Rielly is absolutely the type of player who would be adored in this city.  He's a workhorse and ball of energy who is most certainly a potential future captain as well. I can't see them letting him go though but they do need to address their overall defense.

    Phaneuf being shopped

Would love to get him, but I don't think they are going to move him. He was a pretty key cog in their wheel last year, plus Stastny is likely moving on so they would likely not want to lose two of their top 6.  Now if Colorado signs Stastny, that could all change.
  9. Corn Flake

    Phaneuf being shopped

I think Edmonton would be tripping over themselves to get Phaneuf.  They are desperate for a top pairing d-man and with Dion locked up for 7 years, hometown kid, etc etc... he's worth his weight in gold to them. I wouldn't want to speculate on what Edm would give up, but I think it would be...

    Carlyle Extended/Randy's Revenge

And that is a very fair question. Personally, I don't think he is the guy either, and after sitting back and watching the post-Carlyle announcement carnage fly back and forth, I'm thinking that Shanahan doesn't believe it either. At least, not long term. I'm just not going to run around...

    Carlyle Extended/Randy's Revenge

Well said, Nik. The Leafs are part of a very large, 20'ish team "mushy middle" thanks to parity, where not much can put you in or out of the playoffs.  This fan 'outrage' over not making it, calling for the heads of everyone just doesn't seem to want to recognize that. IMO, just because you...

    Phaneuf being shopped

If they are indeed going to do this, I see it as 99.9% about instituting a culture change from within the core of the team.  I am mostly a Phaneuf supporter but the reality is he has been captain of record during three major season-destroying collapses.  His leadership seems to mostly be about...

    Randy Carlyle/Leaf Coach thread

Wouldn't shock me if he goes too. I would be happy to have him around here too, but he has certainly had a lot of kicks at the can and supported both a coaching staff and core roster of players that can't get anywhere in the post season.  That 4-game collapse was ridiculous.  Ppl keep...

Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

Oh it has? My mistake.  Then in that case..... EVERYONE SET YOUR HAIR ON FIRE NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGEEE1

Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

That is a good possibility too. I could see that, or at least maybe after the 1st round is over. Timmy said Shanny was having tonnes of 1:1's with players, coaches and even executive assistant types around the whole team.  In most cases, 2 weeks is hardly enough time for a new exec to get to...

Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

I said it after the press conference (maybe not here but elsewhere) and I will say it again after that Lieweke interview... Nonis is staying. Also.. wow so in 2 weeks since Shanny was hired no major changes have been made? GASP!

    Round 2: (A1) Boston vs. (A3) Montreal

Always amazes me how Montreal gets Boston off their game. Pretty much the only team in the NHL that can do it.  Being small, fast and incredibly annoying make big team mad. Komarov did some of that to the B's last year. Clearly the plan should be to get smaller and more annoying (and dive...

    NHL Award Finalists

So Giroux goes the first 15 games doing nothing and gets a Hart nomination. Kessel dominates the year until the final 15'ish, and doesn't. Hrumph.

    Torts out on Vancouver?

Could very well be he has his GM candidate ready to go and they've already talked about whether he would want Torts back... easier/better for Linden to do it now than for the new guy to come in and have to rush the move. Bottom line we are splitting hairs on this. What should have been done is...
