While this season is clearly a write-off, I don't think we're at blow it up and rebuild territory, yet. I think we need to see what this group can do under a different coaching staff that brings a playing style that does more to emphasize the roster's strengths rather than trying to minimize...

Yup. It’s failed in the playoffs, but has been incredibly successful in the regular season. There’s been bad stretches, but nothing like this.

Then the coach is either trying something different with PP1 because of their skill level (which is my suspicion, considering the noticeable difference in approach) or he isn’t getting through to the guys on PP1. Either way, coaching is a big part of the problem.

A middle of the pack PP would be a huge difference for this team, for sure. There’s only been a few games they haven’t had an opportunity to bank points in if they could have capitalized with the man advantage. It’s really sinking this team.

I don’t think that it’s the plan, either. It’s just the reality of the systems they’ve tried to implement. Unless they quit on Berube early last season, it points to it being a systemic and confidence issue. You can plan all you want, but if you’re trying to fit square pegs into round holes or...

It’s things like this that make me feel like you gotta give this group a chance with another coaching staff before blowing it up. There’s still talent there, it’s just not being deployed effectively. Get rid of the whole crew, not just Berube.

I don’t think they’ve quit on him, which is actually part of the problem. They had a lot of these same issues last season, they were just getting better goaltending and had a more successful PP. This is the team trying to execute the coaching staff’s game plan.

I point to getting body slammed by McAvoy in the playoffs that year. Could be a combination of the two.

The Marner stuff was speculation that was never confirmed. There were also rumblings about Shanahan blocking other moves Dubas wanted to make (iirc, something around moving Knies+ for Hagel and Fleury was the one that made the rounds), which would have also contributed to him looking for more...

Fire everyone. Trade all of them. Start with a clean slate.

Really good return for Vancouver, all things considered. Lot to give up for what might only be a season and a half of Hughes.

Not with an $3.75m cap hit, he’s not. If you’re picking him up, you need him to be able to crack a healthy lineup.

Considering Jarry’s recent history and contract, not sure it’s a sober move for Edmonton, either. Needs a strong defence in front of him and the Oilers don’t have that.
