Suter to Minnesota?

Before I post this, I'm going to put a disclaimer up that I've not seen Suter play all that much and know little about him...

That being said - can someone explain to me why he's a hot commodity as opposed to Phaneuf who is a trash heap defenceman? I'm just looking at numbers, and they seem evenly matched across the board, from stats to size to age. What am I missing?

And I'm not being sarcastic or anything, I'm honestly asking.

I haven't seen Suter a ton either but I'm going to guess it's their defensive ability which is something that stats don't really do a good job of covering. I'm not the world's biggest +/- fan but in a team context Suter was near the top for his team and Phaneuf near the bottom for his.

Well that would have been my guess as well...

But a 7.5 mil dollar defenceman? I guess I just don't get NHL economics anymore...

Just inflation at work. 7.5 million reflects 10.7% of the cap ceiling. When the cap started at 39 million 10.7 percent of that would be around 4.2 million. So Scott Niedermayer signing for 7 million a year that first off-season represented almost twice as much as a percentage of the cap as Suter will and, upcoming CBA aside, that's likely to go down over the course of the deal significantly.

Suter is a lot more defensively sound than phaneuf. Better positionally, better at decision making and reading the play.

Suter is generally a lot better defensively.

That's great for Minnesota.  Their fans deserve more success than the Wild have been able to supply.  A real coup for Young Fletcher.
