Jake Gardiner signs with Carolina [4 years, $4.05mil AAV]

Seeing a lot of "Ceci cost the Leafs Gardiner!" takes online, but I think it's more accurate to say that Muzzin did. Took his cap space for this season and his LD2 spot in the line-up.

With the benefit of hindsight and assuming Gardiner would have been open to this deal here, would I have passed on Muzzin at last years deadline? Probably. I doubt Muzzin signs a deal comparable to this and we would have kept some extra trade chips on hand for future deals.

If this deal was at all on the table for the Leafs, they're fools for not having taken it.

Was not expecting the 'canes to be after him, but they just got a good d-man for a bargain.

I'm glad Jake found a landing spot but I'll wait until after the season to decide the Leafs screwed up not signing a 29 year-old defenseman with back problems.

He had a QO, they would have had to find someone to take him on.

I don't know why more people aren't grasping this. Ceci would have accepted his qualifying offer if the Leafs elected to take him to arbitration.

I believe they could have walked away from QO? I think you could find someone to take 1yr of Ceci.

No, they couldn't have walked away. Wasn't an option.

Maybe they could have found a taker, maybe not. Without taking anything back? I'm not so sure they could have.

Maybe Jake isn't quite as highly regarded as some have thought. Though my guess is that his back problem is a big red flag.  Apparently not a hurricane flag though.

I think early off season prices weren?t at the number he was hoping for, which would?ve been the information the Leafs had prior to now.

New Jersey missed out here.

Because I thought the process was different? I think that's a pretty reasonable explanation lol.

I thought there was talk that he would've went to arbitration, would've been awarded more than QO and we'd walk away. Either way paying him over QO is an overpayment.

I will say good bye and good luck. As for the Leafs defense, I am very happy with it.

What's interesting is that next year they have all of these defensemen under contract:

Morgan Rielly.
+ Liljegren
+ Sandin
+ Hollowell

They've got to build almost a whole defense group. Will be interesting to see if Muzzin or Barrie re-sign in TO. I'll assume Dermott will re-sign.
