Arn, why was this not brought to our attention.

Full contact egg and spoon football

Haha well. When I was growing up Hurling was, sadly, not a sport that the side of the Northern Ireland community that I grew up in was really exposed to.

However, thanks to a combination of my own maturation and indeed the maturation of relations between people within the community I have been very lucky to have actually attended a few games both in Belfast and at Croke Park which is where the final was played yesterday.

Both hurling and Gaelic football are brilliant sports. Hurling obviously is just that little bit more insane.

I think the thing that really stands out is the players are all amateur and don?t get paid to play. They do that around their day jobs.

Glad you enjoyed it. This game really seems to have caught the imagination of a really wide audience.

Also worth checking out this double save from the semi final a few weeks ago

So is the hurling ball just a tennis ball? And not anything like a cricket or lacrosse ball, or even an orange road hockey ball? Because, that?s the only way I can see saves happening. It looks a touch bigger and not fuzzy.

I'd say it's sort of maybe half way between a tennis ball and cricket ball. It's slightly larger in sinze than a tennis ball and made similar to a cricket ball in that it is a cork centre with a leather casing.

In fact maybe it's best comparison is a smaller baseball.

It's lighter overall than a baseball at around 4 ounces (120 grams) to 5 ounces (145 grams) for a baseball and cricket ball at 5.75 ounces (170 grams).

Ah so it?ll still hurt like the dickens when a batted ball smacks you in the nethers/anywheres.

Oh it'll smart yeah. There's also very little padding other than the helmet worn. Mainly cos it would slow you down/tire you out more on what is a very large playing surface.

The hurls are made of ash, so they're solid enough

Here?s a little behind the scenes type video from Sunday

https://x.com/officialgaa/status/1815112519876583569

If you?re at a loose end this Sunday, it?s the all Ireland senior (Gaelic) football final at the same venue. It?s between Armagh (the county i live in so the excitement has been building locally cos it?s ages since they?ve won it) and Galway.

I?d say the football isn?t quite as mental as the hurling, but it?s still a very watchable game if you can dig out a stream.

Highlights of the last football game between Armagh and Galway who play the all Ireland final this weekend, in case you want to try it as well.

It?s not quite Hurling, but it?s good too

Fire any rules or general questions on either game out and I?ll see what I can answer

Very slick moves; their eye muscles must be crazy good to pull into tight focus when 'dribbling' vs wide for assessing the field
