I didn't see a thread for this anywhere else..... you never know, there migt be something worth discussing.  ;)

When are the opening cermonies? Live and then in Canada?

Anyone have a word for when you're aroused, impressed, and annoyed all at the same time?

Oh, right, there are Olympics this summer.

Haven't you longed for the days where you can seamlessly combine your love of nationalism with your love of the Broad Jump?

They prefer to be called women, and, yes, I do love to watch them jump.

On the plus side, reports are that the opening ceremonies will feature live sheep and emphasize British comedy. So, you know, that joke writes itself.

I loved the opening ceremony, made me proud to be a Brit.

Seeing big Muhammad struggle to wave, even with the help of his wife was really brutal, not ashamed to say I was a little emotional.

Nicely done opening ceremonies --  (though some might say not as spectacular as previous Summer Olympic opening ceremonies) -- complete with the piece de resistance being Her Majesty's 007 James Bond (actor Daniel Craig) parachuting into the stadium with the Queen in tow (no, NOT Her Majesty, just a stunt double).  The whole spectacle certainly caught many people by surprise!

It was a unique evening as the entire opening extravaganza celebrated British origins & culture, culminating with the lighting up of the Olympic cauldron, and, probably the part everyone was waiting for -- Sir Paul McCartney on stage, in celebration of five decades of music.

And of course, Her Majesty the Queen who opened the Games, resplendent as she always looks.

All in all, the opening ceremonies were okay, at times boring for some people, and at times exciting for others. Plenty of effort went into these, as it touched upon many various themes, interspersed with comedy (Mr. Bean)!, and a celebration of British tv & films.

Personally, I enjoyed it all very much.

One caveat -- the uniforms.  Canada looked very chic, up-to-date, modern, and semi-casual.  Not to memtion stylish.
My ancestral land Italy??  Excuse me, but, were these accountant's suits or has something suddenly happened to the imagination of Italian designers?  In a word, boring outfits.
Even the U.S..  I thought the berets were something worn awhile back from Olympics past.  The ladies, with bobby socks and those long flouncy skirts.  Looked more like they were all auditioning for a 1950's movie!  No wonder there why an outcry over the uniforms in the States.  Ralph Lauren could certainly do better.

Judge for yourselves what you liked best, we all have different tastes.  As the saying goes, "to each their own".  And with that....

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

I liked it. I get pop culture references! And Texting?!? I do that on my mobile device! It really spoke to me as someone in the 18-34 demographic with disposable income. Then a closing number by a rock and roll singer? #theolympicidealdefeatedmyyouthfulcynicism

That's Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel winning bronze in the women's 3M Springboard.  Nice!

Heymans set a record with a medal in her 4th Olympics. 1st Canadian to pull that feat.

So are they breeding people just for Gymnastics these days? Like an entire race of tiny, muscular weirdos?

I expected Tsonga (the Wimbledon semi-finalist) to beat Raonic in two straight sets, hoping that Raonic would at least look semi-competitive. Boy has he exceeded expectations, he looks much, much more comfortable on the grass overall. Still needs more polish, but he's giving as good as he's getting to Tsonga.
