100th Anniversary of the Grey Cup 2012

This year's CFL season marks the 100th Anniviersary of the Grey Cup, the championship game itself being played on November 25th at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.


Perhaps many of us don't really follow the CFL or football in general, perhaps some as casual fans, and others as ardent followers.  No matter, since "the big game" is what usually attracts the most attention all across the country.


Every year, I never miss the Grey Cup game, at least, I manage to watch it in part if not in whole, not wanting to miss most of the action.


Which is why I'd like to ask, what is your favourite memory of the Grey Cup championship?


Mine?  Ah, I always remember running back Tony Gabriel of the then Ottawa Rough Riders ploughing through the field enroute to a touchdown!


My favourite memory of a Grey Cup game?  During the Wayne Gretzky-Bruce McNall-John Candy era when the "ARRRGGGOOOOOS!!" led by quarterback Matt Dunigan and running back Raghib 'Rocket' Ismail leading them to victory.

Who can forget those memorable Edmonton Eskimos teams during the Hugh Campbell coaching era.  In fact, Edmonton has the second most championships with 13, just two shy Toronto with 15.

Not to rain on this CFL parade here, but why the hell is the Argos-Eskimos game on at 1:00 on a Sunday? Going head to head with the NFL for a playoff game might just be the dumbest thing the CFL has ever done, and they do some pretty stupid things (like handing out the coach of the year award over 3 months after the seasons ends).

They've done that as long as I can remember. I don't see a problem with it, really, as TSN gets excellent ratings.

TSN would get better ratings if the game wasn't on Sunday at 1:00. Put on Saturday afternoon or even Sunday night. Going head to head against a slew of NFL games is retarded. I might have watched this Argos game if it wasn't up against the NFL, but not now. I'm sure many are in the same boat as I am.
 
The Argos decked out a solid 42-26 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos in the Eastern Semi-Final, as Argo quarterback Ricky Ray played admirably against his former team.

The Argos set a CFL record for most points (31) in a quarter (the second).


Ray's opponent, the Esk's Kerry Joseph, was harried and hampered by the Argos stinging defensive line, eventually replaced by Matt Nichol who injured his leg in the process.  All in all, one can say that it was a bad day on the field for the Eskimos.

The Argonauts now meet the Montreal Alouettes next weekend in the Eastern Final.

In the Western Semi-final, the Calgary Stampeders made short work of defensive breakdowns by the Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive line, enroute go a convincing 36-30 win.

The Stampeders were led by former NCAAer quarterback Drew Tate, who threw wildly at times but still as they say, got the job done.

The 'Riders QB Darius Durant was't so lucky as he  failed to garner much support from his teammates to preserve the lead in the late stages of the game.

It was Calgary's first win against Saskatchewan in six years in these CFL playoffs.

The Stampeders will now meet the B.C. Lions next weekend in the Western Final.

Great win for the Argos in the East final today. Neither team was particularly sharp, but Ray and Kackert had outstanding games for the Boatmen. 

Argos defence came prepared, containing Jamal Richardson (except for one play!)

The downer was a devastating injury to Alouettes Marc-Olivier Brouillette, wheeled off on stretcher after laying motionless for several minutes.  Hope he's ok.

So, anyone have a spare Grey Cup ticket for next week?  :)



 
Between this win, all the Jays doing this week...heck, even a Raptors win today -- I've forgotten about that hockey team we have.

Let's go Argos!
 
The Argos won the Grey Cup during the last NHL lockout so I guess that's a good omen. Excited to have the Argos in the big game although I won't be able to watch it. Can't complain though since I'l be in NYC instead.
 
The Calgary Stampeders will be making the trip eastward to the Rogers Centre in the Grey Cup game against the Toronto Argonauts, as the Stampeders led by veteran QB Kevin Glenn, rallied to a 34-29 victory over the B.C. Lions.

Glenn subbed for injured starting QB Drew Tate, who had been nursing a fractured forearm, and led his team admirably, completing 15 of 20 for 303 yards.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Glenn is excited to have the opportunity to start in his first-ever Grey Cup game, this after a long 12 yr. CFL career.

"It means a lot to actually be able to actually get a team there and actually be playing in the game," said Glenn.

Extra motivation will certainly be there with the presence of his parents making the trip in T.O.

That's sort of the Superbowl strategy too, though. Halftime is for when the people who've been watching the actual game go to the bathroom.
