    Minor Ex-Leaf News

I mean, Ferris talking to the media back in the mid/late-2010s sure helped his client get that bag!

    Jason Robertson extended 1 yr x 12M

Smart move. I wish more teams would do this (see: Maple Leafs c. 2018 or so)

2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

It’s interesting. What goes on under the hood is all so impossible for us to know that we can only make sense of these changes with reference to things we can see that are related but not as directly as we’d like. If we look at this through the paralysis of the late Shanaplan and Treliving era...

This isn’t in isolation. After the Chayka and Hillier hires, I think the data points are adding up.

This isn’t in isolation. After the Chayka and Hillier hires, I think the data points are adding up. Edit to add: oh and the 200+ media jobs across a half dozen stations.

2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

Yeah, that’s what sticks out to me. They only have 4 established top 6 options. Borque just moved for a reasonable package, but was Chayka too busy signing an extra pair of bottom six veterans to get in on that? Shouldn’t some of the bottom six be graduated Marlies on league-minimum contracts...

Who moved up ahead of them today? I think, if they’re moving out Maccelli, Robertson, and don’t have Domi, they need someone besides Roslovic who’s got some offensive upside.

CJ says Tampa too... if it's just TB vs TOR, and CBJ wants something to move the needle now, what're they offering that beats Knies?

    Armchair GM Thread 2026/27

No one at his age or with his physique or on his contract. But you could go 8, 10, 12 deep on the list of UFA wingers to find a Knies replacement, and I still think they’d be better off if they were getting a Norris winner for 26 minutes a night.

    Armchair GM Thread 2026/27

There are plenty of wing options that can give you 70-80% of what Knies can. How much would Werenski improve the defense?

    Armchair GM Thread 2026/27

2C maybe? Werenski, and other true #1D, play 26 minutes a night, so I’d still prioritize that.

2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

Not sure why the Leafs never found a coach who could puzzle out how to make three lines with the four forwards they had. Among the many missed opportunities of the Leafs last decade, I think, was not running through several more coaches.

Yeah, this would be great for CBJ, DAL, and Werenski.

Jonas is for it. Luke Fox is for it. The Athletic did a rundown of 8 possible landing spots. If Werenski is looking to get on a team that’s been in and around the last 2 rounds lately, only Carolina and Dallas strike me as having what CBJ is after. Leafs seem, to me, better positioned to get him...

    Carlo traded to St. Louis

Given how inert Tre was over the last year, I put this one on the former president of hockey ops. Death rattle of the Shanaplan.

    They’re in Win-now mode and need a #1D and a #2C, so, yeah, that’d make that move.

2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

Yeah. I don’t really mind if they don’t get max value for Rielly, but I find it hard to believe they’re going to have 6 better defensemen on the team this fall.

This was true of one very notable recent Leaf. But we also see, are seeing right now, lots of guys who know they aren't re-signing getting traded.

    Brady Tkachuk traded to Florida

I wonder if the return might've been better enough that it would've been worth having him play some of next season under a cloud of distracting uncertainty and bad vibes. He might've begun seeing more than one team as an attractive destination.

2026-27 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion | Official: Sundin & Chayka to lead front office

I am all for moving guys before their contract is days away from expiring and seeing the team manage its assets to remain as competitive as possible for as long as possible. At this point, realistically, that means hoping to see them make moves make them better now that also won't overly...
