I disagree with your premise. I think that fans are swayed a great deal by the recent play of the team and the player.  I am not so sure that a good general manager is.

Another possibility is that New York needs to add a depth defenseman because they are trading one or more to Columbus for Nash without getting one back. Wolski has been expendable all season.
