Leafs Second rounder is in the high 50's...Foligno isn't worth a 1st but he's worth more than that.  if 1/4 of his salary is worth a 4th to SJ....then half his salary is probably worth a 3rd + the player.  If the Leafs had a pick in the high 30's that would be fair, but they didn't, so a late...

If he helps get them to a final.  Totally worth it. 

That's more an indictment on the Leafs scouting. The best player drafted outside the top 10 in the last 15 years is Connor Brown.

my point is those teams traded 1st rounders to win championships with their core in their primes and remain contenders.  then they found players like rust, guentzel, Helm, toffoli outside of the 1st round that they were able to develop.  I mean Matthews is only under contract for 3 more...

I agree.  Look at Detroit, Pittsburgh, LA. If your core superstars are there you can build around them while they are in their prime.  This is the year they have to go for it.  I am bit surprised Foligno cost a 1st...

I?m sure that will start happening once they have sewn up 1st place

Nash was once traded from Edmonton for the draft pick used to draft Marty Marincin.  Life comes full circle

Out 4-6 weeks.  No cap implications in regular season...worst case costs a 7th. Best case he returns in playoffs, he contributes and they win the cup for a 6th rounder

Thornton has lost a step...but keep in mind he's playing for the league min.  I think hes full value for that price.  Don't think you get much better player for 700K

I do.  They played very well against a quality opponent.  Goalie came up big when he needed to.  My big takeaway is that these are the tight games they would lose in prior years.  Prior iterations of the Leafs and its probably a regulation loss
