But if you sign him now, you can bring down his cap hit.  Give him a big signing bonus so lost salary for missing most the year has little to no impact.  Basically spread out the total cost of his contract by an extra year.  He'd be LTIR anyways, so wouldn't impact this year.

Meh, they're already doing well without Muzzin, Rielly's had a terrible year so far.  It's not full-on giving up, just letting the youth take a larger role and stockpiling assets for next year. Edit: and I wouldn't say this if Barrie and Muzzin had more term.  Given they're UFA, get something...

This is a really good gamble... If he keeps it up or improves, we have a top-4 dman for 2M - quite literally a steal.  If he falters and falls back to bottom pairing, he'll be a slightly overpaid bottom pairing guy, which should be fairly cheap to jettison of needed.
