Reaves traded to San Jose

Thrun will reunite with Matt Benning and probably take one some of the harder minutes for the Marlies.

There’s a big stack of actual NHLers, potentials, and projects down there waiting for the inevitable break down in the Leafs aging d corps.

Barring a trade, it’d make sense to give Danford a spin with OEL on the third pair, and Cowan a longer look with a Roy or Tavares line to see what they can do. Chop up their first ELC season a bit and it’ll bring down the price of contract 2 (or help decide one way or another their asset value)

Put Cowan on a line with Tavares and Nylander. They saddled Holmberg with those two in the playoffs, surely Cowan can be an improvement.

Hard to get a good read on Thrun’s abilities, given where he was playing, but he does look like a potential NHL calibre guy - even if that means as a 7th D type. Reaves, on the other hand, is basically unplayable at this point. So, win for the Leafs.

Well like I said yesterday I was definitely expecting a move after Reaves' podcast interview and I think a team like San Jose made a ton of sense. Tons of cap space, lots of young guys that someone like Reaves seems to always have good relationships with. Certainly wasn't expecting a semi-competent NHL-ish (#7-8-9) defender out of it so that's cool.

Nothing really went all that well with Reaves here on the ice but he's undoubtedly a great teammate. Hope he can make it to 1000 games like he wants.

I'll agree with that. The Leafs dressing room no longer needs a pure vibes guy to dispel any weird tensions to keep things light and fun.

I am actually quite shocked by how low his PIM totals have been throughout his career. I guess people were too scared to fight him!

The contract was probably an overreaction to a roster with zero grit by Trev, but he was a scary dude to play against and seemed like a fun guy to be around. SJ seems like a good fit with a young roster and lower expectations. Hopefully, he can protect the young players and keep it light in the dressing room.

Good for the Leafs developing a team toughness approach, not one allocated dude to punch people.

While I said above I'm impressed that Tre got as much back as he did, I wouldn't join MLHS in characterizing this as a "small win" for Treliving. It's a modest lessening of the overall impact of a bad signing, one which produced next to no value and helped screw up the 4th line for 2 critical seasons in the Core 4 era.

I'll truly never understand what he was thinking signing Kampf, who only makes sense playing heavy defensive 4th line minutes, and Reaves, who only makes sense playing NOT heavy defensive 4th line minutes, to 4/3 year deals within a couple of days of each other.

Like the money and term of the deals were bad enough, but each player basically nerfed the strengths of the other. If Kampf was able to play with other defensive players the 4th line would have been fine. If Reaves played with other physical players he would have been fine-ish. Together they were a disaster.

Getting nothing back for him would have been an addition by subtraction win. Getting something serviceable I guess tips it into being a win.
