A few observations:
- seems to play on either side of the ice and scores from both sides
- plenty of PP scoring like Connolly - both players should help in that regard
- pretty good shot & mobility
- is a good finisher as a trailer and does it a fair amount

Leafs’ Liles ready to take the lead
http://sports.nationalpost.com/2011/07/20/leafs-liles-ready-to-take-the-lead/
“I’ve been in the league for eight years, I think they kind of know my game,” Liles said Tuesday during his first public appearance as a member of the Leafs. “I don’t think they’re looking for me to reinvent the wheel or anything.”
....
Liles has not had much time to adapt to his new home due to a number of personal commitments, which had the Indiana native travelling across the continent. He is in Toronto this week to check out the team facilities, meet some players and find a place to live.

“I’m starting to get the feel,” Liles said when asked if he had any idea what playing in Toronto will be like. “I know a lot about the Maple Leafs organization, obviously the history involved with it, and having played in the West and growing up an American kid I think you have a sense of it, but you don’t fully realize it and now that I’m a part of it I’m going to catch on pretty quickly.”

Liles does not know his new teammates that well. He met Tyler Bozak in Denver through mutual friend Paul Stastny. He played against defenceman Mike Komisarek in college and spent time with Tim Connolly via the U.S. national program, but other than that he is basically starting fresh.

“I was in Colorado for eight years, seven seasons, and [this] is a new team,” he said. “I was very familiar with a lot of the guys. Obviously there was some turnover, but you become very familiar with the place and this is a new chapter for me, a new city, but I’m excited.”
...
“I think each and ever year you try and take on a bit more leadership, a bit more responsibility and I think that obviously everybody is different, but for myself — and I would imagine Tim [is] the same way — you try to accept that responsibility of being one of the elder guys on the team and accept a little bit of leadership as well.”

Liles is heading into the final year of his contract, but vows that will not be a distraction.

“As far as contract year goes, it’s not really a different approach for me. Contracts are going to take care of themselves if you’re out there playing the right way each and every night and that’s my approach to it.”
....
“You see the progress that they’ve made — obviously toward the end of the year last year, the record that they put together, obviously a heck of a run toward the playoffs,” Liles said. “I was talking with Burkie yesterday and just saying we played them toward the end, during that run, and caught them at a pretty good time.

“They were an impressive team to play against and now, joining them, I’m excited.

Hopefully, JML makes them more 'impressive'

Leafs' Liles makes good first impression

TORONTO  - John-Michael Liles had spent all of about 10 minutes in a Maple Leafs polo shirt before he made a positive first impression.

The 30-year-old defenceman, acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in June, made his initial public appearance in Toronto on Tuesday afternoon, chatting with patients at the Hospital for Sick Children and signing autographs for the young Leafs fans.

“It’s fantastic,” Liles said of his meet-and-greet with the kids. “I tried to be as much a part of the community (in Denver) as possible, and to come here, and to be my first appearance, it’s definitely a special feeling.”

For the player and patients both. Fifteen-year-old Danielle Borden came away with a couple of signed mini sticks and a stuffed animal after talking to Liles.

“It’s awesome,” Borden said. “You see them on TV, but you never think you are actually going to meet one. It makes coming to the hospital a little more fun.”

I like this guy already! (there's more to the article, I just pulled in a snippet)

Interesting that Dater felt that he should have been named Colorado's captain. That's very nice to hear.

Getting to know John-Michael Liles.  Nice interview of Liles.  Very proud of wearing the Leaf jersey.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/09/27/liles_brophy/

Even though he came from a team that won two Stanley Cups (1995-96 and 2000-01) and joined a team that hasn’t won it since 1967, he understands the rich history of his new employers, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

And even though he was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN, where hockey is about as popular as cricket is in these parts, Liles feels the excitement that is in the air this time of year with the hockey season gearing up.

"There definitely is a sense of history with this team," Liles said. "The best comparison I give to people back home, because people don’t really know hockey that well, is it’s like playing for the New York Yankees. There’s a sense of history; there’s a sense of pride…the crest…the jersey. Regardless of where people grow up, if you play hockey and you play long enough, you understand the history that is attached to this organization.

"You know about the great players who played for the Maple Leafs and the amount of pride the city and the surrounding areas have for this team. It’s something that is a little scary, but at the same time extremely impressive. If you grow up and play in the NHL it’s something you want to be a party of. Whether you play for the Leafs for half a season or for five seasons, you want to always say I was a Toronto Maple Leaf. If you play baseball you want to say I played for the New York Yankees."

At 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, he’s not the most intimidating defenceman you’ll come up against, but he has terrific offensive instincts and great speed.

"In Indiana we didn’t get a whole lot of hockey on TV, but when we did it was usually Rangers games," Liles said. "I grew up watching Brian Leetch, a guy I tried to model my game after even though I was a forward up until high school. I played forward and defence. My coach in the ninth grade told me I was playing defence and I would be wearing No. 4. I didn’t really have a choice in the matter. I was okay with it."

Like Orr and Leetch, Liles greatest contribution has come on offence. It is the part of his game he accentuates, although he doesn’t ignore the defensive side.

"My role is to hopefully move the puck, make a good first pass and if the opportunity presents itself, join the rush," Liles said. "That’s something I am comfortable doing, but at the same time I try to not sacrifice the defensive side of the game.

Asked if he has been encouraged by Toronto’s coaching staff to get involved in the offence, Liles is cautious.

"You have to trust in your reads," he said. "There’s a reason why I’ve been in the league for seven seasons. It’s because I make good reads and I have to trust my ability to do that. If the opportunity presents itself, I think every defenceman on this team has the green light to go if you think it’s appropriate."

So I was watching Leafs TV last night and they were covering Brian Burke at this year's draft. Paul Holmgren was congratulating Burke on the Liles acquisition and Burke said (paraphrasing) "Yeah, he's a skilled guy... We need more of those... You can't win much with a bunch of Paul Holmgren's and Brian Burke's on your roster."

Anyhoo... he's right.. and it brought a smile to my face.  :)

Yeah I remember seeing that and chuckling too. I think I saw it on one of the 'behind the draft' vids or some such.

While Kabs provided some very nice skills, I see Liles as an upgrade for sure. Though a smaller d-man, he battles pretty tough along the boards, comes up with the puck a lot, jumps in the rush, and isn't afraid to take his own shots on the PP. Definitely liking this pick-up.

I'm curious about people's thoughts regarding Liles.  To me, he's come way better than advertised, at least much better than I expected.  perhaps some of that was due to the 2'nd round pick the Leafs sent to Colorado, which now with hindsight seems like a pittance.  In fact, straight up, does anybody trade Liles for Kaberle?

I know what my answer is, and I hope that Burke and company have begun thinking about resigning JML.
