I don't think either of the top-2 lines have been very impressive tonight, but Matthews' still has a pair of goals and we (finally) got some secondary scoring.

I agree. We got pushed around tonight. But our talent (especially in goal) won it for us in the third.

Andersen sure saved the day there toward the end but puck possession was the difference.  Before that flurry on the extended Caps shift I think they had had only 3 shots.

Right! And that's our speed, talent, and youth on display. I think we're better than the Caps this year, but we gotta get stronger on D to go far in the playoffs.

Shilton's postgame writeup.  After noting early in the piece that Leivo scored on the PP, she wrote this later:

So-so special teams

Toronto entered Saturday’s game tied for the best power play in the NHL (50 per cent), with the 8th-best road penalty kill. It was taking the Leafs an average of just 46 seconds to score a power play goal over their first five games, a stretch where they scored seven times with the extra man. Saturday marked the first time this season the Leafs’ power play was scoreless. Unlike other clubs, Washington was assertive on the penalty kill, forcing Toronto’s vaunted first group of skaters out of their comfort zones and into quick passes instead of shots. The Leafs’ second attempt was better than the first in that they generated more scoring chances, but good boxing out by the Capitals held Toronto at bay - until Leivo picked up his first of the season on the Leafs’ third power play attempt in the third period. That was the first time all season Toronto’s second power play group has registered a goal, and marked the sixth straight game Toronto has tallied a power play score.

Probably meant the first time the top unit didn't get a PP goal.

Matthews is on pace to beat Gretzky’s 50 goals in 39 games record by 9 games.

I’m not saying he will do it. I’m just fascinated at how crazy this start has been. That Gretzky record is one that I think will never be broken.
He can and he will.*

Freddie H. Andersen, H for hero this game

At least the Leafs figured out Holtby just in time, all the while Freddie was keeping them in the game protecting their lead.  That third period was pivotal.

P.S. Take that, Eller!  :)

Finally...Leivo.  Glad to see the pride of Innisfil, ON pott a goal.  Once won't be enough though but at least he was in the right place at the right time.

"Have you ever been in a stretch like this where the puck is just following you?"

Every boring player: No, this has been something special

Auston freaking Matthews: F Yeah

I think it's method of dealing with a steady of stream of generic questions for the next 8 years. And it's awesome.
