I don't anoint Matthews as team captain until he signs a fair market value, long term deal, to stay in Toronto.  Until he signs long term, I'd be willing to offer the C to Tavares.  JMHO.

So the question remains, what's fair market value for Matthews?

Apparently Matthews collided with a team mate in a scrimmage today, had to leave the ice to tend to a cut but otherwise ok (please no more concussions)

fire that teammate immediately. Unless his name is Marner, Tavares, Nylander or Mogen

It seems strange to me that they haven't given Matthews an "A".  I am hearing grumblings that it is for a reason.  The whole thing seems pretty hush hush.  It's not hockey related.

Probably something to do with future contract negotiations. His agent could use his captaincy as bargaining power .  8)

Lol.

This front office babies its babies. Listen to the way Babcock talks about leadership being on and off the ice, and about accruing battle scars. Hainsey, Marleau, Tavares, and Martin are/were here for mentoring the future/now current core. The captaincy is Matthews whenever they feel he is ready to have it.

I've heard that Matthews is a mustachioed four-flusher of low character who frequently fails to write his mother.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Justin was right on this one. At the very least, he certainly doesn't dress like a hockey robot.

His social media remarks and particular goal celebrations suggests yes. Also that video Connor Brown took of his dancing.

Also the autograph he wrote on Craig Anderson's stick after his debut.

No, I believe him very much. I was more sarcastically expressing my disapproval at the idea of a hockey player having a personality.

See my response to CtB but in addition, I'd add that too often in sports some people tend to confuse "Loud Fratty Jackass" with personality. More Gronks we don't need.
