World Cup Russia 2018
« on: June 13, 2018, 06:27:18 AM »
Starts tomorrow so where's your money?

Spain sack their coach the day before the tournament so that either destroys their chances or maybe galvanises the side.

Germany always likely to be there or thereabouts.

Brazil needing to bounce back after their embarrassment at their home world cup last time round.

England to be hyped by the English press irritating the rest of the UK into hating them even more and supporting Panama/Tunisia/Begium

Also: Keep an eye out for the Croatia v Nigeria game for the clash of the greatest football kits of the tournament

I'm not a big soccer guy but my rooting interests in a tournament like this tends to be:

1. Whoever is playing against England
2. Underdogs

It's Panama's first trip. All the countries I have known but questionable and distant relations to are all out. Except for England, but no one cheers for them.

I don't have the slightest idea but I usually cheer for Netherlands because of my wife's family living over there and they have done well the last few World Cups so I will say the Dutch.

It's going to be very hard for the Dutch, since they're not in it this year.

The Dutch didn't make it this time, nor did Italy for the first time in a very long time. Full list of qualifies teams here:

First game tomorrow is Russia v Saudi Arabia which doesn't sound overly exciting.

First big game will be Spain v Portugal on Friday I think

Haha... I did start with the precursor "I don't have the slightest idea...".

No.

Since the Oranje are not participating this year, I will side with the closest alternative and go with Belgium.

I have spoken.

Well, since my father is German and mother Croatian, that's where my allegiances lie.

Since gli Azzurri didn't qualify, I'm cheering for all the countries that I've visited and/or where some friends reside in, which are...Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands (non-qualifier)), & Romania (non-qualifier).

As an Italian, it just doesn't feel the same without the blueshirts there. Toronto's "Little Italy" usually pretty vibrant at World Cup time, will feel awfully quiet this time around.

Russia started off the World Cup with a convincing 5-0 demolishing of Saudi Arabia on opening day Thursday.

Yesterday, Friday, Portugal & Spain played a dandy of a match which ended in a 3-3 draw,  Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick (three goals) the last  one on a  beautiful free kick, sending the ball arcing over the heads of Spain's defenders and sailing it past a stunned Spanish 'keeper DiGea:

Perhaps Spain's firing of it's popular coach Julen Lopetegui just before the commencement of this World Cup my be affecting the players, who it has been said, had objections over the firing.  His replacement, Fernando Hierro many doubt he carries the same credentials of field smarts as Lopetegui did.  Hierro previously served as the squad's technical director.
