A very talented group of players and defencemen. I can't say the same about the goaltending... hope we score a lot of goals.

Well, there's only two goaltenders lol. Garret Sparks is meh, but Owuya is touted pretty highly.

I watched both of them, and they're nothing to boast about.. sparks IS meh and young.. but Owuya never really stood out to me when comparing his skills to last years goalies (Scrivens and Rynnas).

I've been looking for this information but couldn't find it. Is the rookie tournament this weekend being televised on Leafs TV?

It was briefly discussed in this thread:

Quote from: http://tmlfans.ca/community/leafs-talk/general-leafs-talk/msg5249/#msg5249
The rookie tournament starts Sep 10th
http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=585936

Those games can be fun to watch. If you need a Leafs fix, it won't be long now ..

Anyone know if it'll be broadcast at all?

The Pens game will be on line:
http://www.pensburgh.com/2011/8/30/2393616/pens-to-participate-in-rookie-tournament-sept-9-13-in-oshawa-ontario
All three games will air on Penguins HD Radio (WXDX FM HD-2 and streamed live on www.pittsburghpenguins.com). Steve Mears and two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque will broadcast the action. Full tournament coverage can also be found at www.pittsburghpenguins.com.

I'll keep an eye out for the other games and post as the info comes available.

Nice find, I was looking through the Leafs TV schedule and couldn't find it. You'd think Leafs TV would at least show the games since they typically don't have anything else to show before the preseason.

Last year, it was streamed on the Leafs site. Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing these games as I did last year. The NHL Network doesn't have them either. They have three Rangers prospects games Saturday,  Sunday and Tuesday. Oh well - at least I can see hockey games.

I would expect either Gardiner or Frattin to be the best player on the team, and I'm exited to see how Broll does.  I've kind of got high hopes for him.

http://leafsprospects.com/2011/08/09/leafs-rookie-tournament-roster-announced/ (http://leafsprospects.com/2011/08/09/leafs-rookie-tournament-roster-announced/)

This link has a scouting report on some of the players that dont stand out on the Rookie Tourni roster.. (dont know if there is any truth to this..)

------
For those who may not recognize the above mentioned players, a quick scouting report on them…

Garrett Clarke - Once a highly touted Dman coming into the Q, Clarke’s stock fell because of internal issues with his team. An offensive blueliner, He brings an edge to his game, along with the ability to rush the puck. He’s a tremendous skater, as well. There was talk of attitude problems throughout his career, though if Burke has invited him… he must have looked into it.

Kyle Neuber – A big physical presence, Neuber has been a member of the Columbus organization since he was drafted in 09. He’s a clear cut enforcer who can drop the gloves and rattle some bodies. Otherwise, he’s a kid who needs work in the defensive side of the game, and lacks the true footspeed to be much of an NHL’er. How he’s on this roster? I’m not sure, as he should still be under contract with the Blue Jackets.

Mike Schwindt – Another big boy, Schwindt is a nice defensive presence who can rattle a few bodies. You won’t get any offense from him… absolutely none, but he may be able to crack an NHL roster as a 6th or 7th Defenseman. He was recently traded to the Soo Greyhounds and could be a steadying presence on their backend.

Matt Stanisz – While not overly big, Stanisz is a pretty calming defensive defender who saw his offense blossom in his Overage year, playing with Jesse Blacker’s Owen Sound Attack. He likely won’t have that offensive game in the pros, but it’s worth noting. He’s usually the defenseman who makes smart and calm decisions and plays sound defense.

Denny (Dennis) Urban – A small offensively gifted defender, Urban saw brief time with the ECHL’s Reading Royals, where the Leafs brass would have seen him. He was one of the better defenders in the country, and had gained some support for the Hobey Baker this past year, after beating the record for most points by a defenseman in Robert Morris (his NCAA team) history.

Dave Cowan – Cowan was on the roster last year, and was a teammate of the aforementioned Urban. He’s another big defender, with some steadying skills defensively and a long wingspan.

Kyle Neuber was never offered a contract by the BJ's, which is why he can attend the Leafs camp. That site is a bit shoddy. Anyway, he sucks.

I'm excited to see Devane. He finished strong last season.

A couple of notes on tonight's game:

1) Two forward lines have been confirmed so far: McKegg-Crescenzi-Nicholls and Broll-Heard-Frattin
2) Mark Owuya will start in net for the Leafs, with Garrett Sparks taking over at the half-way mark
Title: Re: Leafs Rookie Tournament
Post by: CarltonTheBear on September 10, 2011, 05:26:12 PM
A full line-up for tonight's game has now been released, courtesy of Marlies reporter Clayton Hansler:

McKegg - Crescenzi - Nicholls
Broll - Heard - Frattin
Ross - Ryan - Devane
Olden - Carrick - Leivo

Clarke - Gardiner
Stanisz - Blacker
Urban - Percy

Owuya/Sparks

Clearly Eakins is trying to spread out the talent, particularly on the blue-line. That 3rd line could potentially be the Leafs 3rd line in a few years, or at least 2/3 of it with Ross and Ryan. Would have liked to see Olden and McKegg together, since they'll both be playing for Erie this season in the OHL.

I was impressed with Devane's first period and Gardiner's complete game. Gardiner is even faster than I thought, he's got some serious wheels out there. Blacker appears to be continuing his upward trending and made some very good plays most of the game.I also thought that Ryan played a good game throughout.

The Leafs have some good size in the system these days, it is really starting to be a strong point for them.

Good to see some of the Leafs' rookies shine, in particular, Jake Gardiner, with his speed and puck-handling ability.  Gives hope that the Leafs will have some good hands to depend on, in the future.  Potential is noticeable.

I was at the game, here is some quick observations:

Owuya - Played really solid. Looks a big goalie who is very mobile. Looked confident

Gardiner - Actually struggled early in the game, but took over in the 3rd period. Could be a star in the making. Skating is outstanding, and will likely improve other areas of his game as he gains experience.

Blacker - Very solid, not as fast as Gardiner, but more physical and likes to hit. Really like this kid.

Frattin - good skater, and worked hard, but quiet game overall. Maybe has eye on main camp.

McKegg - very quiet, didnt do much in this game.

Devane - good night. Scored a goal, won a fight and spent some time killing penalties. Looks to have improves his skating.

Ryan - reall good game, Leaf's best forward IMO. Works extremely hard and was rewarded with a nice goal. Looks to be the ideal 3rd line checking forward, down the road.

Leivo - quiet game, but looks a good skater and does simple things well.

Nicholls - similar to Leivo, but definitely looks a little stronger than he did last year.

Carrick - I like this kid. Didnt really excel last year in the OHL, but works hard and plays feisty. Could be a good 4th line centre down the road.

Percy - Didnt show much offence, but very composed in his own end and makes good decisions with the puck. Very smart player, reads the game well.

Olden - Big and fast. Looks like he has a lot of potential. Looking forward to see how he does in the OHL this year.

Sparks - Looked shaky early on, which is normal, but seemed to settle and get better as game wore on.

If you're going to pick one of these games to miss, tonight's might just be it. Blacker, Gardiner, Frattin, and Ryan will all be sitting this one out, making way for Tyler Brenner and Kyle Neuber, Dave Cowan and Denny Urban. Garrett Sparks will play the entire game. Here's the full line-up:

McKegg - Crescenzi - Nicholls
Broll - Heard - Devane
Ross - Neuber - Brenner
Olden - Carrick - Leivo

Schmidt - Percy
Stanisz - Cowan
Clarke - Urban

Sparks

And just a reminder the the game will be streamed on mapleleafs.com on a 30-minute tape delay starting at 7:30pm.

I saw a bit of the beginning of the game.  I actually wasn't all that impressed with Gardiner.  On the power play his handling of the puck and receiving of passes wasn't super slick.  I hope he played better as the game went on.

He did score two goals and the GWG on an end to end rush ;)

You can tell McKegg has a lot of finesse in his game. Olden not looking too bad. Heard had a couple chances, now has a goal. That's about it though. That was a crazy bounce.

It's interesting how generally you can't tell who the touted players are. Despres is supposed to be pretty good but I haven't seen much. Ross isn't doing much outside of chirping. The D has been unremarkable. Not much to say other than it seems to be a workman-like effort right now.

Sparks is standing tall!

What a goal by McKegg. Just awesome hands. Reminded me a bit of Nazem on simple, streaky move.

Yeah, McKegg has some real big league skill....

Devane was good again tonight, he actually skates really well for a tough guy, or at least a guy that is known for that. He set up the last goal there, but I'm not sure if he meant to, or he was just getting a shot on net. Either way, he is big and he has some skill, not just a brute.

Sparks again settled down and played a really good game. Heard is a good pick up as well, he showed some hustle tonight and got rewarded for it, being in on two goals I think.

The Leafs have some really good players in the system, it's blatantly apparent.

Yeah, I mean the team just dominated the Pens to no end, and our best players weren't even dressed. It didn't even seem like a fair game.

Now the real test is Ottawa though. They're really coming up big with young talent right now: Jared Cowan, Zibanejad, Rundblad etc.

It'll be interesting to see how Tuesday's game plays out, as both teams are undefeated and relatively dominant.

I think we also need to temper the expectation a little. From what I watched of the games so far (and it has been limited) the rookies looked pretty good. I am cautiously optimistic - while they looked good, it was still the equivalent of AHL good. Many of them still have a long way to go but I like that we are looking deeper on the farm.

Oh yeah, and truth be told, some of them probably won't even make the cut at the AHL level. We're not brimming with NHL ready talent, but there are some bright spots, and its nice to see some players impress. It gives me hope that a 3rd-7th rounder might surprise and come out as a quality player.

If truth be told, over the past few years the organization has done a pretty solid job with their late round picks.

They may not have the flashiest list, but they've come away with a lot of players and solid prospects when usually teams come away with nothing.

The only recent year they didn't impress was in 08 (aside from picking Schenn obviously)...

One thing that really stood out to me at the game was that they seemed really big.  They had a lot of players out there that seemed to tower over the Pens.

With D'Amigo out there isn't a single player listed under 6 foot on the roster.

McKegg with the tying goal with 48 seconds left.

Has to be said Gardiner had an assist because his speed allowed him to save the empty net goal against, he can fly out there, clearly a step ahead everyone else.

Frattin, Olden and McKegg with the goals so far.

Gardiner's speed on that tying goal was amazing, his d partner fell and he still got across before the forward.

Tough break in overtime...

All and all a decent game by the Leafs. McKegg was good again. I thought Olden played a decent game and may be a gem we picked up, but obviously too early to tell. He has good wheels and he looks to have put on some size, or did I just miss that last year?

That Clarke is quite fiesty huh? Not much else to him really. It also would have been nice to see more skill from Ross, as I thought he was too focused on being a pest, rather than the play.
Good game by Owuya, but the Sens talent was too much in the end IMO.

Just watching the highlights, Owuya looks like someone who will suit Allaire's teachings quite well.

Also, that seemed like a rocket of a shot by Frattin.

McKegg and Michael Heard each finished the tournament with a team high of 4 points each (McKegg going 2-2, Heard going 1-3).

Nice shot by Frattin, assisted by Jake Gardiner, who continues to excel on the point, but whose work defensively still needs fine-tuning ( the way he was fooled on the Sens overtime goal).

What was most impressive about these Leaf rookie team was their never-say-die attitude and effort to just keep right on skating and be creative, keeping the game flowing, plus plenty of enthusiastic gung-ho effectiveness.  That Devane guy is sure going to be diffiicult for opponents to beat to the punch (no pun intended   ;D ).

Owuya continued his solidity in stopping shots from different angles.  He certainly looks to be a Leaf goaltender of the future, with a lot more training and experience, of course.

Thought Olden was very very good, as was Frattin, Carrick was a bit of a suprise. Mckegg also looked good. The goalie (cant spell his name) has real potential, a very good glove hand. Finally we go into the future with guys whom can compete, not some of the duds we have had in the past

Owuya definitely looked like he was hung out to dry on a number of ocassions by the defense. I think he's got real potential as well. I like his attitude. Olden's also an interesting prospect.

I think so, too.  Owuya, while not yet NHL material, showed he can hold his own whenever the situation arose.  There were a number of times when the defence went one way and the opposing offence went the other.  Some gaping defensive zone miscues were noticeable.  Nothing that can't be improved.. I liked what I saw overall from these rookie games.
