Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Zach Hyman Suspended 2 Games
« on: Today at 12:18:11 PM »
I just don't understand why Wagner didn't even have a hearing then.

That's the one I have a problem with. I think the sort of late, unsuspecting hit Hyman delivered is bad for the game and needs to be eliminated from the game so I'm fine with his suspension; but the deliberate intent-to-injure sort of hit that Wagner tried on Morgan shortly thereafter is (IMO) even worse. That's the sort of predatory attack that could end a career so I find it really disappointing that they turned a blind eye to it.

Some really tough choices this week. Almost all of these games could easily go either way. I like that.

3 Jackets
6 Isles
2 Sharks
4 Preds

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Auston Matthews
« on: December 06, 2018, 07:41:52 PM »
What incentive would Matthews have to sign now? He's been racking up points already and now he finally gets Willy back on his wing. Every game pushes his value up and there's virtually nothing that could happen between now and July 1st that could reduce it. If I were his agent (or Marner's) I'd tell my client to play out the season and *then* talk.

That only holds if you really think the Leafs are going to fight Matthews on what he wants. If Matthews has a monster season, what would he ask for the Leafs that they wouldn't essentially give him anyway? Is he going to ask for significantly more than McDavid?

Okay, but what reason is there for him to sign a deal today (the suggestion Zee made that I was replying to)? I don't see any down side to him waiting and there's a chance his play could nudge his ask higher.

You know Dubas is working with Matthews' agent on the new contract.  Predictions on when it gets announced?

New Year?, sometime in Jan?

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Nylander signs 6-year contract

We're in trouble.

Kapanen and Johnsson on the attached link are slated at 2.5M and 1.5M... yeah right.

I really don't think these two guesses are that crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if both are signed to 1-year deals just so the team can get past the Marleau deal and then they'll get raises after that. The Leafs will actually be able to sort of use their lack of cap space in their favour in these negotiations. They can hold a strong stance and literally just say "this is all we can afford to give you right now, take it or leave it".

I wonder if either might be the target of other teams to offer sheet with some term and a little bit of an overpay? Kapanen at 5 x $3.5 would probably be something the Leafs would have a very hard time matching and but wouldn't cost the poacher much at all and would likely still be a bargain.

Yeah, maybe. But I figure if someone is going to buck convention and make other GMs look sideways, might as well do it for a bigger fish, no?

Leafs would match anything non-insane for Matthews or Marner rather than let them walk so yes, if the goal was to further screw up the Leafs' cap situation that's the way to go.

With Kapanen I could see a team (Carolina?) making an offer in the 5x.35 or 5x4 range that would be a bit on the high side but not terrible...one that the Leafs really can't match because they won't have the room.

The Leafs could see a lot of their really good support players become potential targets for offer sheets that they really can't match yet aren't gross overpayments by the poaching teams.

Hyman
Anderssen

Freddie really deserves the MotM but it's so nice to see Zach contribute directly on the scoresheet (twice!) that I'll give him the nod.

Here's a thought. What if we signed Nylander, and traded other players instead.

Herm, my dude, you really don't want to hear what I think of your boy Dubas for not just signing Nylander months ago.

If it was at the $8m+ he was reportedly demanding months ago I suspect the tirade you'd unleash on Dubas would have been related to very poor cap management and caving in too soon.

Doesn't this further reinforce the notion that the chances of Sparks having cleared were close to nil?

Matthews
Marner

Really liked Kapanen and Johnsson on Matthews' wing...hope they stay there in the event that Willy doesn't sign. If he does, I hope one sticks and the other slides down to replace Brown on Kadri's wing.

Also really liked the 4th line tonight. Leivo in particular has looked fully engaged on every shift this year which I felt was the knock on him in previous years (far too often he'd go out and have a dynamite shift or score a goal and then seemed to think he could take the rest of the night off...in these last few weeks he's making himself work his tail off every second he's on the ice and it's paying off). Ennis is also looking more and more like the very good player he was pre injury.

1 yr ~40,000 Euro in SEL

Marner....so often the best player on the ice by a country mile
HM to Kadri....maybe Freddie deserves it more but this was the first time in about 2-3 weeks that Naz has looked like himself

I would have loved to give the HM to Marleau just for the remarkable feat of 1600 career games, but he's starting to show his age (more than he did last year). I think he has brought a ton to the team over the last year and change of his tenure here, including the intangibles of veteran leadership and being the perfect roll model to the kids, and the price for that was giving him that 3rd year....I have a feeling that fans are going to forget the benefits and resent the price in these next 18 months which is too bad.

Johnsson
torn on the HM...guess I'll go with Dermott

stick taps to Sparks and Marner
