Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Leafs 2014/2015 Schedule in 10 game chunks
« on: November 24, 2014, 01:46:40 PM »
Halfway through December, and the Leafs will be done with the Wings for the rest of the regular season. That's crazy for a divisional opponent. 5 games against them in the first 30.

I was just scoping out the schedule last week and noticed that as well.

Bizarre.

I really liked and respected Pat.  Some of my fondest Leaf memories are with him behind the bench.

R.I.P Pat Quinn.

4 years?  Thats a decent enough deal.

Stastny got 4 years last season also.  Most other notable UFAs at the time got less than that.

Seems like GM's may be wisening up on the term.

Not surprising. You take a family with a household income of $60K and then have a 22 year old son making $2M+ a year and it's a recipe for disaster without proper guidance.

I know a guy who won $3.3M in the lottery and was essentially bankrupt a couple of years later. It's surprisingly easy.

I wouldn't have a clue what to do with a couple of million dollars. Though at 36 years old, I know enough that I'd be hiring a competent financial advisor.

But it's not like his money was mismanaged. His money seems to have been essentially stolen from him by people he should have been able to trust. I come from fairly humble roots but I'm pretty confident that my parents wouldn't do this to me even if I did trust them with my finances

Wasn't the problem that it was mismanaged?  One way or another...

Out of curiosity, which team should we, as TML Fans, collectively cheer for after the Leafs are officially out?

I've been debating that.

I consider myself a free agent.

I think Colorado perhaps?  Maybe SJ?  I have to see who I find myself cheering for if these 2 match up.

I'd be buying him out asap.

Why?

Because it's inevitable.  So if it's bound to happen, do it immediately to get the cap relief immediately.

Why waste $5.25M in cap space next season when we could be saving around $3M we could put elsewhere... and we can play Ashton or Bodie in Clarksons spot and not lose a thing.

Yes, the 6 extra years around $1.8M would suck but the cap will be a lot higher then AND we've already been dealing with dead money for years (Tucker's $1M for 6 years, etc).  Not that big a deal.

I was surprised to see all the well wishing posters for him at the Prudential Center.  He obviously made an impact there.

I think sometimes a player is just an incorrect match for a team's type of play.  The idea, I believe, was to get him engaged in the cycling down low play.  But the 2nd and 3rd lines have spent such little time in the offensive zone this year he really hasn't found a groove.

And maybe this all revolves around Bolland in a way that would have given Clarkson a chance to show what they can do in the cycle.

You are giving him far too much rope and credit.

David Clarkson can not play hockey.

Please dont call this "retrospective analysis."  Many posters were immediately and strongly against the grabbo buyout.  Most posters were even more dismayed the moment Clarkson was signed, especially when a guy like Maccarthur was apparently available on a cheaper, shorter deal.

And those people are free to print a bunch of T-Shirts that say "WE WERE RIGHT" in great big neon letters as they fall over themselves posting in the ex-Leafs board every time Grabo scratches his nose. It doesn't change that, as smart as those people are and as good as they think they've gotten at predicting the future, those deals are only ultimately going to be judged retrospectively. Some people thought Clarkson was the better buy than Grabo, others(a group that legitimately includes basically every single NHL GM) didn't. That the smart money won doesn't mean that it was never a question.

So is there ever any move that is not a question?

Clearly every move is judged retrospectively.  Saying "I was right" is justified.

Just in case you are wondering how much it would cost to buyout Clarkson
http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2013/12/13/5208704/david-clarkson-buyout-chart

Saw it on capgeek.  Theres really only 1 or 2 significant years.  The rest are less than $2M or so.

I'd have bought him out yesterday.

There's limits to when these buyouts can occur, right?  We can't just buy him out now?  Because if we can, and I was in charge, I'd do it...

Good god man no FA would sign in Toronto ever again!

THEN EVEN MORE REASON TO DO IT!

Less Komisarek's, Blake's, Connolly's, Beauchemin's, Clarkson's, etc.

We'll gladly take the guys begging for jobs with PTO's and cut from arbitration (MacArthur and Raymond).

Right, there's a time frame during the summer.  I was saying it in jest.

Why is depleted in quotation marks?

That was definitely a depleted Pens lineup.

What bothers me the most:

We give the puck away with poor dump ins and lack of a forecheck.

We NEVER circle back and wait for fresh linemates to pass the puck too.

We have way to much tunnel vision... get the puck, dump it out and await the onslaught from the other team.  We don't value the puck at all, we just give it to the other team.

For some reason JVR dumped it in on a 6 on 4 PP with an empty net.  Carry it man don't give up possession in that scenario.

For some reason?

I think thats a coaching thing honestly.  We are constantly doing it.  I noticed Raymond liked to carry it but even he's dumping it now.

And last week when Ashton took that puck over the glass penalty?  He had Kulemin streaking right out of the zone but Ashton didn't even look, just dump it off the boards and out.

I really think the coaching staff preaches that but it's clearly not working.

Steve Weiss, one of the other big UFA signing of summer 2013 has also been a disaster with the Wings.

Clarkson for Weiss?

I would make that trade in a nano second.

2 less years and a few hundred K less as well.
