Game Notes

ARI
•Kuemper (9-11-4, 2.69 GAA, .914 Sv%) will likely start for the Coyotes
•Arizona is situated right in the middle of the wild card race and the bottom of the Western conference. A 7-4-2 run is keeping their hopes alive but they'd have to leapfrog 4 teams to make the playoffs
•Nick Schmaltz put up a decent 14 points in 17 games after being traded for Dylan Strome earlier in the season. Unfortunately a knee injury at the beginning of the month put an end to his season
•Remember Richard Panic? Boy times sure were better when he was a Leaf eh

tor
•andersen will likely start for the leafs, not that it will even matter
•the leafs' lines were in a blender all game on friday, so difficult to tell what babs will throw out. one thing is for sure though it won't make any difference because this team isn't going anywhere anytime soon
•281 players have more goals than matthews does since december 22nd. probably because he's already mentally checked out of toronto and wants to go home. he may as well just save everyone some time and start playing for the coyotes right now
•the leafs are at least doing one thing right, and that's hacking the nhl.com website to make it look like they're 5th in the nhl in wins. we all know that can't be accurate

Injuries

•Kevin Connauton - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
•Brad Richardson - Upper Body - Injured Reserve
•Nick Schmaltz - Lower Body - Out for season
•Michael Grabner - Eye - Injured Reserve
•Antti Raanta - Lower Body - Out for season

Game Notes

TOR
•Sparks (6-2-1, 3.00 GAA, .905 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Sparks will be playing in his first game in about 3 weeks as he was out with a concussion. Granted that is about how long he goes without starts even without being injured

FLA
•Luongo (8-11-1, 3.35 GAA, .892 Sv%) will likely start for the Panthers
•Luongo let in 5 goals on 22 shots against the Leafs about a month ago before being pulled in the 3rd period
•Don't bother googling them I swear Hawryluk, Lammikko, and Kiselevich are all real hockey players
•The Panthers are one of the worst teams in the league and are 0-5-2 in their last 7 games and yes they still think none of this would have happened if they only just kept Erik Gudbranson. All hail Dale Tallon

Game Notes

TOR
•Andersen (20-10-1, 2.55 GAA, .922 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•The Leafs juggled around their forward lines a bit at practice on Wednesday. Hyman, Matthews, and Nylander were reunited while Johnsson went over to the Tavares-Marner line
•You probably haven't heard, but the Leafs are in a small slump right now. They're 2-5 in their last 7 games
•Matthews has 1 goals in his past 10 games. Nylander has 1 in 17 games this season. Kadri has 1 in his last 18 games. Marleau has 0 in his last 9. Those 4 sure would like to start scoring again soon

TB
•Vasilevskiy (19-5-2, 2.46 GAA, .925 Sv%) will likely start for the Lightning
•The Lightning are on pace for 129 points this season. The most amount of points a cap-era team has achieved is 124 by the 05-06 Red Wings. So yeah they're alright I guess
•Kucherov leads the league in scoring with 75 points in 47 games, which puts him on pace for 130 points. The most amount of points a cap-era player has scored is 125 by Joe Thornton in 05-06. So again, not bad
•Kucherov is actually scoring just under 2 points per game since the middle of November. He has 57 points in his last 29 games. I'm told that's good
•Point has 42 points in his last 29 games while Stamkos has 38 points in that same stretch
•Cedric Paquette is pointless in his last 12 games though. Yes, I literally had to go all the way down to their 4C to find someone who was struggling

Game Notes

COL
•Varlamov (11-10-5, 2.82 GAA, .909 Sv%) will likely start for the Avalanche
•Colorado has one of the best lines in hockey right now: Rantanen, MacKinnon, and Landeskog have 68, 66, and 51 points respectively. Rantanen and MacKinnon are 2nd and 5th in league scoring
•The Avs are in quite a rut right now with just 1 win in their last 10 games. They were once comfortably in a playoff spot but they're now fighting to keep their wild card position

TOR
•Andersen (20-9-1, 2.50 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Andersen and Sparks were both full participants at practice with the Leafs on Sunday. Sparks says he's received clearance from the medical staff, while Andersen said he feels ready to go. We'll have to wait for a final confirmation tomorrow but I'm guessing we'll see Freddy back in net with Sparks backing up

Game Notes

BOS
•Rask (12-8-2, 2.43 GAA, .920 Sv%) will likely start for the Bruins
•Oh look, the Bruins are mostly healthy now. Great
•Pastrnak is pointless in 3 games so we all know what that means
•Boston trails Toronto for 2nd place in the Atlantic by 4 points, and the Leafs have a game in hand
•The Bruins just had a 5 game winning streak halted by the Capitals on Thursday

TOR
•Hutchinson (3-3-2, 3.29 GAA, .886 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Starting goalie hasn't been decided yet though. Babcock said Friday that he'll need to check with the medical staff about Andersen. Earlier in the week Freddy said that he was hoping to return for this game, but Babs felt Monday was a more realistic target
•Buffalo and Montreal are still kicking around, but really at the end of the day the Leafs first round playoff opponent was always going to be Boston. All that's left to decide is who gets home ice advantage
•This sure would be a good night for a William Nylander breakout performance

Injuries

•Joakim Nordstrom - Leg - Injured Reserve
            •Charlie McAvoy - Foot - Probable Saturday

Game Notes

TOR
•Hutchinson (2-3-2, 3.49 GAA, .878 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Andersen is still a no-go despite taking part in the last few practices. He says he's hoping for a Saturday return, but Babcock says probably Monday
•Hyman is expected to make his return to the line-up tonight. He'll take his usual spot on the Tavares-Marner line
•Nylander and Kapanen switched spots at practice yesterday, so Kapanen gets another go with Matthews
•And if you missed it, Babcock finally rejigged the PP units so they look more like last seasons groups, with Matthews and Nylander being on the "2nd" unit

NJ
•Kinkaid (13-12-6, 3.07 GAA, .898 Sv%) will likely start for the Devils
•Kinkaid is really struggling to meet the performance he had last season while in the starters role. He put up a .913 Sv% in 41 games last season
•That's just one of the reasons the Devils are near the bottom of the standings right now
•Taylor Hall has been out with a lower body injury since late December, and will likely miss another week or two. Surprisingly the Devils have fared ok without him going 4-3-0
•3 of those wins came with rookie goalie MacKenzie Blackwood in net though, who is also now injured. Blackwood had a .954 Sv% since Hall went down

Game Notes

NSH
•Rinne (15-10-2, 2.31 GAA, .919 Sv%) will likely start for the Predators
•Rinne started the season with a fantastic 14 games, going 9-2-1 with a .944 Sv%. In his last 16 games though he's gone just 6-8-1 with a .895 Sv%
•Back-up Juuse Saros is 3-0-1 in his last 3 starts with a .972 Sv%. That includes Nashville's most recent win against Montreal. So it's possible he gets an extra start here
•Nashville's been missing some key players due to injury this season, but they had Subban (out 19 games) and Arvidsson (out 21 games) return to the line recently
•Filip Forsberg has been skating and his return seems close too. Forsberg's been out since November 29th but is still tied for the team lead in goals with 14

TOR
•Hutchinson (2-2-2, 3.39 GAA, .878 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Andersen and Sparks are both being careful with their injuries, so Hutchinson gets another start. Expect Kaskisuo to back-up again

Game Notes

VAN
•Markstrom (17-11-3, 2.79 GAA, .910 Sv%) will likely start for the Canucks
•In his last 10 games Markstrom is 8-2-0 with a 1.70 GAA and a .942 Sv%
•If you haven't heard, Vancouver's uber rookie Elias Pettersson will miss this game after suffering a knee injury against Montreal on Thursday. Pettersson, the 5th overall draft pick in 2017, has 42 points in 38 games this season
•No word yet if Vancouver will call-up a forward in Pettersson's absence. Would be pretty interesting though if current Toronto Marlie Sam Gagner received a 2nd call-up this season
•Former Leaf Josh Leivo is also out with an injury. Leivo had 4 points in his first 6 games with the Canucks but just 1 in his next 8
•Vancouver's season has gone better than many expected it to. They're in a very close race for the wild card spots in the West

TOR
•Hutchinson (1-2-2, 4.18 GAA, .851 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•If you missed the news, Sparks is out with a concussion, so Hutchinson will get another start
•Andersen was a full participant at practice with the Leafs on Friday, but the Leafs won't be rushing him back. No word yet on who will be backing up Hutch but I'd expect a Marlies goalie will be called up to do the face-off tracking

Game Notes

MIN
•Dubnyk (13-14-3, 2.62 GAA, .912 Sv%) will likely start for the Wild
•The Wild are 1-4-1 since losing top offensive defenceman Matt Dumba to an injury that will keep him out until late March
•That stretch has put Minnesota 5 points behind Dallas for the final wild card spot, and 5 points behind Vancouver for 9th in the West. They do have 2 games in hand on the Stars, and somehow 5 games in hand on the Canucks

TOR
•Sparks (6-2-1, 3.00 GAA, .905 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Andersen is still out and considered day to day at this point, meaning Sparks will get another start. The back-up goalie is TBD, but I'd expect newly acquired Michael Hutchinson to get the call-up tomorrow
•Day game! Last years afternoon/kid game was a pretty big success for the Leafs, both on the ice and off. They won the game 8-1 against the Hurricanes and had an arena full of young fans

Injuries

•Nick Seeler - Upper Body - Questionable Thursday
•Matt Dumba - Chest - Injured Reserve

Game Notes

NYI
•Lehner (6-6-3, 2.44 GAA, .919 Sv%) will likely start for the Islanders
•New York is also on the 2nd half of a back-to-back as they played in Ottawa on Friday and got a 6-3 over the sens
•The Islanders are having a better season than I'm sure most expected. They currently sit 2 points behind Boston and 3 points behind Montreal in the wild card races. They also have 2 games in hand on both teams
•Barzal and Bailey's P/GP rates have dropped from 1.04 and 1.02 last season to 0.89 and 0.83 this season. Lee is on pace for just 31 goals after scoring 40 last season. So some slight drop-offs post-Tavares but they're still producing at decent rates
•Our old buddy Leo Komarov is rocking a 42.5% CF rate this season. Among the 216 forwards to play at least 400 5-on-5 minutes this season, Komarov ranks 208th in that stat

TOR
•Andersen (20-9-1, 2.50 GAA, .923 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•All eyes will of course be on John Tavares in this game, as he plays his former team for the very first time. Trotz has already made a bit of a statement as he said he wants his players to recognize that Tavares choose to not be their teammate anymore in the summer
•How is Tavares doing in his post-Islanders life you ask? Well he's on pace to score 56 goals and record 94 points, both of which would be career highs. He's tied for 2nd in the league in goals and has the highest 5-on-5 goals/60 rate. He's also recorded 2 points in each of his last 5 games. So, not bad.

CBJ
•Bobrosvky (16-10-1, 2.68 GAA, .913 Sv%) will likely start for the Blue Jackets
•Columbus beat the Rangers 4-3 in OT on Thursday. Korpisalo started that game so the Leafs will get Bob on Friday
•Bobrovsky had a rough opening month to the season, but has been stellar since then. He's also 5-0-1 with a .962 Sv% in his last 6 games

DET
•Bernier (5-9-1, 3.38 GAA, .898 Sv%) will likely start for the Red Wings
•The Wings are coming off a 2-1 loss to Florida on Saturday night that saw the team outshoot the Panthers 34-23. Howard was in net for that one so the former Leaf will get the start here
•The Wings will be the 5th straight team Toronto has faced that sits outside of the playoff picture in the East
•Nyquist and Larkin are doing their gosh-darn best to keep Detroit relevant. Both players have 13 points in 12 games in the month of December
•Detroit's current defence group has 44 points between them all this season

TOR
•Sparks (4-1-1, 2.84 GAA, .913 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs

CHL & NCAA Hockey / IIHF adds a "late hit" penalty
« on: December 21, 2018, 01:45:11 PM »

This is going to be... interesting. I don't really watch WJC hockey anymore but that first example happened probably about 153 times a game in the Canada ones from 5-10 years ago.
