General Rumours & Speculation / Re: Armchair GM 2018-2019
« on: December 05, 2018, 09:10:00 PM »
Crazy idea:

Step 1.
Rent Taylor Hall at the deadline for some pretty good NHL-ready youngsters (Johnsson, Brown, 1st round pick) to help the Devils shepherd Hischier/Bratt/Butcher (I'd also LMAO if all it cost was Zaitsev one-for-one). Honestly not sure what it'd cost, but we've got cost controlled assets at the right age range for their budget team. We can handle the cap hit with all the space we've banked with Nylander out.

Step 2.
Hall - Matthews - Nylander

Step 3.
Stanley Cup

Step 4.
Trade Hall at the draft to recoup the spend to hire him as a mercenary in his prime. Maybe he wants to go home to Calgary to ride out his UFA platform season.

  More offence ?

It's difficult for me to conclude that Dubas has botched the negotiation when the negotiation hasn't concluded.  Let's see what happens by 5 p.m. tomorrow.  About all I can conclude at this stage is that not having Nylander as yet hasn't destroyed the Leafs season.  They are in a very nice spot in the standings and are poised to continue it, hopefully with Nylander in the lineup.  Whether it has indeed been screwed up by Dubas will take some time to reveal itself.

I can't see Dubas messing this up. He is working within the cap system that,s before him.The fact that they signed Taveras for 11 mil pretty well tells me that Nylander was not in their long term plan. He is being offered around the league and I think will be traded.

I,m giving my .02 cents on what's happening. The contract value has been worked out,but Dubas is trying to trade him for a cap friendly top 4 defenceman and some change.

They need a top 4 for the playoffs more than another scorer. With Gardiner becoming a too expensive free agent in the off season, this would solve their defenceman shortage as well for next year at a cheaper dollar than Gardner.

I guess what I find is a bit of a shame, is that we've got probably the best team since 93, we have a player that is 3rd in the LEAGUE in points, and this has been by far the most popular thread.

I honestly hope they trade him so more focus is on the amazing season they're having.

And I couldn't agree more with you.

I just don't see how they can afford to keep the "top 4".  One of them has to go, and I vote Nylander.

I think they can keep them but it has to be something along the lines of WN $6.5m, MM $7m, and AM 10.5m.

God help the Leafs if one of them flames out.

With the  Taveras on board this summer spelled the end of Nylander as a Leaf.  I just don't think he' s  Babs kind of player.  I'm predicting he will be traded.

Four  1st round picks for Nylander.  I would take that in a heart beat.
Depends what team. If it's a contender they would be low first round picks and you won't get another Nylander, if it's a marginal playoff or bottom feeder than absolutely I'd want the picks for the lottery opportunity alone

Bottom feeders probably wouldn't do it for fear it could end up like Ottawa this year. However 1st pick for 4 years even from a contender could change in one or two years where they would end up in the middle.

I think the reason that they don't want to over pay for him because of his tendency to take the odd game off.  Give him 6 years and he might want to take even more.  I,m a bit iffy with him long term.

Might as well trade Nylander for two 1st,s and save a protected spot for another player for the Seattle expansion.

Most importantly, before the puns come in, his name is pronounced like pair/pear/pare.

Pär pared a pair of pears.

Well, I'm relieved that Dubas has listened to my concerns, and addressed the issue of adding size to the wing.

 :P
As well,at this pay level,Dubas can afford to bring in another max contract type player.

I can,t help but think that this is a great signing. To get a heart and soul player, still in his prime and from Toronto.  This is huge.

I originally made the comment that I would not make Auston the captain right now.

Well, sort of. You said in your comment it would be "because he might be gone in a year" which, you know, isn't going to happen. Beyond that I think a lot of people are hesitant to make him captain right now for some legitimate reasons, namely he just might not be ready, but as Zee has said, even if the organization did want to make him the captain they wouldn't do it without a long term commitment agreed to beforehand.
[/quote

Agreed on that.If he signs long term then he deserves the captaincy. I,d even donate $5 bucks to his contract.

Your right Nik, however Mathews might balk at Babcock,s coaching style and may not be easy to sign.

There's a veritable whole wide world of things that might happen. I think you need to start dwelling in the realm of probability rather than possibility before it influences your decision making though.
I originally made the comment that I would not make Auston the captain right now.I was drawn into the reasons why, which was not my original intent I,m not trying to put a negative to the Tavaras signing.
This our year to win the cup.

Yep, just because it was rare in the past, doesn,t mean it won't happen. There,s lots of pressure on Gm,s too improve there teams. I can see Arizona doing it,if for no other reason than to get fans to fill their seats. And make a huge impact in the southern states.

This sort of ignores the reason why offer sheets are so incredibly rare. Teams know that they'd have to make the offer so high, and the compensation so steep, that it would probably be a net negative for them. They're not good hockey decisions by and large unless you're dealing with a team that's pressed right up against the cap which the Leafs won't be.

It's a pointless exercise. Either a player is good enough that matching the offer is worthwhile, in which case their team matches it, or he's not worth the contract he's offered in which case it doesn't help the team offering it.
Your right Nik, however Mathews might balk at Babcock,s coaching style and may not be easy to sign.
That was another reason, you might not want to give Auston the captaincy. I,m also wondering if Tavaras isn,t the back up plan, just in case.

if someone offer-sheets marner for the max, you take the 4 first round picks for him, sign the best UFA D for his money and smile to the bank.

Good point,we still win.  Isn't a max contract worth 5 1sts ?
