Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Mitch Marner: what now?
« on: September 13, 2019, 03:09:54 PM »
Thanks for your opinion, I don't expect you to not give yours so I won't withhold mine. Cheers.

One of my favourite places in the world is Speaker's Corner in London's Hyde Park. If you don't know it, it's a small corner of the park where anyone who wants can come, make themselves a little speaking stool and expound on whatever suits them. No matter what. Last time I was there I saw an African man talking about the lingering effects of Colonialism and a Bulgarian immigrant talking about Eastern European trade policy. It's been around for the better part of 200 years and it's featured such speakers as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and Marcus Garvey. Everyone is welcome and all opinions are brought forth to the public square.

Thing is though, there is back and forth. The pesky thing about the public square is that, sometimes, the public answers back.

What the Greeks done wrought, huh?

I am visiting in London now and I was amazed at the passion of the speakers in Speakers Corner.  One guy brought his own ladder (instead of the small stool ) and he yelled for hours it seemed.

I was thinking of getting up and talking about how the Paul Marner approach to contract negotiations was the right way to approach things but I don’t think anyone in the UK was going to engage in a philosophical discussion about it.  Now if Darren Dreger was visiting at Hyde Park he would certainly have responded....

The Leafs should play Nylander with Ennis and Moore for the 3rd period.  And not play Marleau Brown and the Goat who have not generated any offence for the playoffs (if not the last 3 months...).   But it would require coaching shrewdness by Babs which has been woefully lacking.

Carried the play had the 1-0 lead and then a needless penalty albeit weak as was Dermott’s and the game completely changed.
I blame Babs for starting the 4th line after the goal. He needs to get away from that crap. Drives me crazy when he does it.

Totally agreed!  This is a key playoff game and he is still trying to equalize the ice time.  There should be some accountability for his game decisions....

4
Why does  Babcock do this to us?  Why does he keep putting out slow veterans?

5
Why doesn’t Babs try Muzzin withZaitsev on the PK?  Hainsey looked so slow and tired earlier.

6
Babs plays the 4th line always after a goal because it is his way and he is predictable and stubborn.

7
What a great cross ice pass be Muzzin.  (Likely to be overturned...).

8
What a great fake by Dermott.  Has Zaitzev ever done that in the last 2 years?

If the Leafs can get a chance to make a couple of fast cross-ice passes in the Bruins end, they should score.  I think their forwards are playing with more commitment than in the last game.  And Ennis and Moore are players. -  they should play more than Marleau.

Former Leafs: Ex-Files / Dion Phaneuf
« on: February 10, 2019, 08:52:02 AM »
Dion was a healthy scratch in the Kings last game.
He understandably wasn’t too pleased with that and spoke with both Desjardins (the coach) as well as the GM Blake.
The Athletic has a good article about this .
IMO, thank heavens the Leafs traded him without retaining any salary.

Main Leafs Hockey Talk / Re: Leafs Acquire Jake Muzzin
« on: January 28, 2019, 09:30:11 PM »
The handedness might not be what we were expecting, but the team acquired a legit top-4 defenceman that fits this system pretty well without giving up Kapanen, Johnsson, Sandin, or Liljegren. I think that Dubas did pretty well here.

I certainly agree with this cogent assessment.

Hopefully he is placed in the top 4 defence and Hainsey gets moved down and Dermot gets moved up as well.

If Babcock insists on playing Zaitzeff and Hainsey on every penalty kill, it may not make much of a difference unfortunately.  Time will tell....

Millen identifying that Nylander is back with Matthews for the first time 5 shifts after it happened

It seems that it is tough for him to identify things quickly especially when he is between the benches.  But what I find particularly annoying is when he says that ordinary or routine or capable saves are fantastic or unbelievable or incredible.  It is interesting that the director of the telecast doesn’t reign him in more.

The Leafs aren't out of this yet.  Their offensive speed is noticeable tonight and they have been outplaying a few of the Bruins defence men.

Polak doesn't take his guy in front of the net.

And how many times has that been?  And what does it take too make stubborn Babcock to ever react?

15
What an absolute moronic play by Polak to take that penalty.
