Game Notes

TOR
•Andersen (17-9-1, 2.69 GAA, .922 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•The Leafs had a bit of a mental reset yesterday, as they took practice outside and held a little 3-on-3 tournament at an outdoor rink with the help of Minnesota-native Jake Gardiner's dad
•No Auston Matthews again for the Leafs. He's confirmed to be out with something for sometime
•Noted failed crease-clearer Roman Polak is set to play in his 9th straight game this season, unless of course Babcock suddenly remembers that Connor Carrick exists

MIN
•Alex Stalock (4-3-1, 2.93 GAA, .907 Sv%) will likely start for the Wild
•Dubnyk was injured in Minnesota's previous game and isn't expected to play
•Stalock of course had a short but not-sweet tenure with the Leafs after he was acquired in the Reimer trade in 2016. The Leafs dumped him on the Marlies where he mostly sat before the team let him and his wife and infant son return home
•Stalock was looking forward to playing against the Leafs earlier this season but the birth of his second child got in the way of that start
•Minnesota is currently clinging onto the final wild card spot in the West. It's a tight race where 2 points separates 5 different teams

Injuries

•Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
•Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
•Nikita Soshnikov - "Groin" - "Injured" Reserve
•Auston Matthews - Hand/Concussion/Back - Day to day

•Devan Dubnyk - Lower Body - Doubtful Thursday
•Jared Spurgeon - Groin - Injured Reserve
•Zach Parise - Back - Injured Reserve

It seems like no one is particularly wild about this game.

I'll show myself out.

Yeah, like, "the game will start in the evening hours, likely 7pm-8pm range".

It's just lazy.

ETA:  For those of you that prefer exactitude, the official game time is 8pm.

But yeah, thanks for pointing that out. I knew it was at 8pm the 7 just snuck in there.

I was going to make a joke about how Polak would probably need to score on his own net to get taken out of the line-up but then I remembered what happened in Edmonton and that would probably just earn him a contract extension.

Marleau-Marner could be fun.

Finally a shake-up on the Hyman/Brown combo, those guys have their strengths but together it was not working, with or without Matthews.  Also interesting to see how Nylander and Marner perform in different spots.

Nylander's defensive game did improve last year after a mid-season stint with Komarov-Kadri, even though their styles did not mesh. i.e. this is not new.

If I recall correctly, Komarov speaks to Nylander in Swedish on the ice, likely to troll Kadri.

I think Marner ends up with Kadri by the end of the year. Their styles are much meshier.

I see we continue to play in the world where getting horribly outplayed justifies Polak's existence in the lineup.
The forward lines are intriguing but I'm concerned Babcock is just going to flip them back quickly.

Leafs barely getting a sniff of the net at even strength. This dump and chase BS is killing them. Time to ease up on the reins there, Babs. You tried something, you stuck with it for a while. It ain't working. Move on to the next strategy.

Komarov is incapable of having the type of shift that Leivo just had. Yet Leivo sits in the press box unless there’s an injury and Komarov is guaranteed a spot in the top six regardless of his historically awful season.

I'm back to the Carlyle days where I am hoping for a loss because it will force the coach to change the style of this team (it never does).

Romanuk and Millen talking about finding a happy medium, which is probably true but part of that is letting the team bomb away in the 3rd in a game like this against a nonconf opponent and down just 1.

Also, Babcock needs to put Marner in a headlock and tell him if he doesn't shoot more he'll get leivoed.

It's really not that hard. The evidence is pretty clear. The strategy he's employing isn't the right strategy. The fact that he's been successful in the past doesn't change that.

And, the best coach in the league over the last 10 years is Joel Quenneville.

It’s not his instinct to play this way. i.e. thinking about what to do instead of just doing it. The NHL doesn’t allow for that kind of time most nights.

Also, the whole recovering the puck instead of skating with it thing. He's not a guy who is ever going to excel at puck battles or heavy forechecking. He's a guy that needs to attack with speed.

Missing Matthews’ offensive gravity there a lot as their PK shaded Nylander to outside the circles.

There was a seam available to Nylander when Gardiner bumped to Marleau, but Marleau likes to shoot.

Can't win them all, especially if you're playing pathetic!

Well, I mean Greg "Softball" Millen roused himself enough there to declare that the dump and chase "isn't really working."

By far the most frustrating stretch of the Babcock era, watching them is absolutely no fun.

Yup. He's driving a team with a powerful engine, but not taking it out of 1st gear, it seems. I get what he's trying to do, but he needs to find a better way to do it. This one isn't going to work with this group.

I’m watching the Lightning @ Coyotes game now because I need a palate cleanser of a blue and white team dummying an animal logo’d team with waves of speed and goals.

If we're gonna lose I wish they'd just open it wide up and lose that way. Just play like we're down 1 or 2 in the third period right off the bat. Usually pretty unwatchable until they feel the need to start pressing. Remember when win or lose they'd score four of five? Man, that was CAN'T MISS TV. This... is not that. I'm almost not that concerned about playoff positioning at this point. I just want the last 60% of this season to be exciting. They certainly have enough creativity to make that happen. Turn 'em loose a bit.

Something to ponder...

One thing that stands out as the writer notes is that by limiting the skilled players' ice time in favour of the grinders, will result in the penalty differential in going from a plus 0.33 to a minus 0.77 with a month-to-month variance.

Maybe Babcock's saving his real coaching for the playoffs.

Maybe Babcock's saving his real coaching for the playoffs.

Babcock's comments are disheartening and borderline delusional. The Leafs' play has nothing to do with how hard they are squeezing their sticks and everything to do with the system they are playing and line-up management.

Komarov had over 19 minutes of ice-time in a game we were struggling to score. The defence and forwards were chipping it out/in (and giving the puck away) rather than maintaining possession because that's how they are taught to play. These are issues of Babcock's own creation, and have led to the team not playing well by any metric except goaltending.

This team was playing a run and gun style game and we knew the offense wasn't going to last. They were scoring at an unsustainable rate and everything in this league levels off eventually. They were also giving goals up at a rate that spelled disaster and that needed to be leveled off immediately or the team would be on the outside looking in.

A good defense creates a good offense. Currently, the offense is taking a hit because of the focus being placed on defense and the group of players not knowing how to transition a defensive stop into an offensive opportunity. This is a young group of hockey players. They are going to take time to adjust and figure it out. As fun as it is to watch a team win 7-6, it's equally as frustrating to watch a team blow 3 or 4 goal leads like they have shown the tendency of doing(both this season and last).

Now, as is evident by the amount of shots being given up, the defense still needs a lot of work. The growing pains will continue.

The team may not be fun to watch right this second but the team needs to learn how to play the game correctly. Winning 7-6 or losing 6-5 isn't learning how to play the game correctly. It's teaching you that the only way to win is to put up 4+ goals a night and we all know that's not going to happen. Not consistently unless you're dressing Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Coffey and Anderson.

That is extremely shortsighted. We'd all love to see them turned loose but that does not lead to success. See the Edmonton Oilers as an example of a team that has "refused" to play the "boring" game and has struggled as a result.

So the possession and offence-oriented play of Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh doesn't lead to success?

We can cherry-pick examples all day, but the bottom line, in my mind, is that the Leafs are not playing to their strengths, and that is not a long-term recipe for success.

This morning on Ottawa radio, Maguire said that he thought the problem was that they can't seem to marry the defensive system that Babcock wants to play with the offensive skill that they have.  He the thinks that at some point they will get it, and at that point, the Leafs will be very dangerous.

You can't compare Toronto to the Pittsburgh Penguins or Tampa Bay yet. They're not there. They're trying to get there. But in order to get there they need to play both ways.

You can't be a team that can only play one style of game and expect to be successful long-term in this league. You have to be able to turn it up when you need to, and shut it down when you have to.
