Game Notes

TOR
•Andersen (27-15-13, 2.73 GAA, .916 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
•Nylander with Matthews, Brown with Kadri, and on and on we go
•Gardiner was paired with Zaitsev at practice yesterday while Rielly paired with Marchenko, indicating that Marincin will return to the press box
•Looking at Tampa's injury list and you really realize just how lucky the Leafs have been in that regard this season
•This is pretty easily the biggest game of the season for the Leafs so far. They trail both the Islanders and Lightning by a single point for the final WC spot, but the Leafs have a game in hand

TB
•Andrei Vasilevskiy (17-13-6, 2.53 GAA, .919 Sv%) will likely start for the Lightning
•Vasilevskiy is 5-0-1 since Ben Bishop was traded, with a .956 Sv% during that span
•Former Leaf Byron Froese played a pair of games for Tampa with their injured centres out. He was pointless and a -2 in them
Froese was reassigned back to their AHL team yesterday though, indicating that someone (likely Namestnikov or Johnson) is ready to return
•The Steven Stamkos Watch is officially on: he's started skating and shooting, although still without the rest of the team. But a return later in March seems possible at this point

Injuries

•Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
•Joffrey Lupul - ¯\_(?)_/¯ - Out indefinitely
•Stephane Robidas - Old - Out indefinitely
•Connor Carrick - Upper Body - Injured Reserve

•Vladislav Namestnikov - Lower Body - Questionable Thursday
•Tyler Johnson - Knee - Questionable Thursday
•Cedric Paquette - Leg - Questionable Thursday
•Steven Stamkos - Knee - Injured Reserve
•Ryan Callahan - Hip - Injured Reserve

I'm calling tonight's clash the 'weather vane' game.

Which way are the winds of fortune blowing for the Leafs? What's the forecast?

I think we'll have a pretty good indication after this one.

The good news is that even after this game we'll still have a game in hand but this is definitely and must win. We still have one more game against Tampa but it may be too late by that time to make any impact if we lose here.

Froese was called back up and was on the 4th line at practice, so looks like no reinforcements for Tampa just yet.

Hyman with a very nice play behind the net to get a clean pass out to Matthews, who missed as he was covered on the shot.

Nylander makes a great defensive read to scoop up a freed puck at the blueline and tries to restart the cycle but Hunwick hesitates on the leading pass and it's lost.

Polak with the amazing ability to miss 3 open players, each about 3-5 ft from Polak and each other, with a breakout pass.

He may have been aiming for the TBL net from his red line.

Rielly with the second lowest ice time amongst the D in the first, Gardiner leading with over 8 minutes.

Pretty good first period, hopefully we can get a few more in the second.

Auston Matthews did about five things on that shift that won't show up in any statistics but display the depth of his game.

What a tool. Those are exactly the types of things that corsi show that other stats don't. Matthews wins a puck battle, creates a shot attempt for the team, recovers the puck, another shot attempt. Rinse and repeat.

You still have to be generating shots to take advantage of flubbs, and the Leafs are doing a decent job of that. i.e. more Gardiner, pls.

Yes, they are playing much better than 2 nites ago, esp. on D.  Still, no matter how wicked Willie's wrister was, Vasilevskiy gave up a pretty inexcusably fat rebound to make that last one possible.

Here's something that Steve Simmons can mention about Matthews: he has the discipline to stop in front of the net on rush plays, instead of curling behind the net and taking himself out of the play.

Nylander was shooting for a rebound into Matthews' stick.

Check out the Heat Map to see how heavily they are leaning on the point shot from the right side tonight for rebounds. Usually the Leafs don't use the point shot, and when they do, it's from the left.

Matthews all over the puck on both sides of the ice on his latest shift.

He's really looked like he's trying to skate around the entire defense. He definitely knows he hasn't scored in a while.

I guess he knows about POS' Hyman tweets.
Matthews just got some 4-on-4 time with Marner and draws a PP to ice the game.

5-2 Oil 2nd period. Isles lose, Leafs in 2nd wild card with a game in hand.
If Boston loses 4 back of them with 2 games in hand.

Green gear on Saturday and the showdown on Monday ;)

What a terrific game by all of the Leafs (when they all collectively had such a poor game against the Panthers).

Regrettably I was at the Panthers-Leafs game and it was quite exciting for the first 17 seconds, but then....).   As usual there were many Leaf fans at the rink and they were hoping to cheer anything, so it was a pretty quiet night.

Polak was really solid and in fact was named the third star on the Lightning telecast tonight.  And it is so good to see Andersen come back after a bad first period against the Panthers.  And Reilly had a solid game (2nd star tonight), which may auger well for his confidence level at least.

The Tampa Bay telecast was somewhat interesting as they stated, in effect:

Andersen was told by the Leafs to change his style at the start of the season but then decided after the first 5 games to play less aggressively which helped him.

Stamkos was practising earlier today, and saw Babcock in the stands and made a point about going to Babcock and telling him what a terrific teammate Boyle was.

The Tampa players were obviously disappointed about giving up several of their players at the trade deadline so they were going to make a point about playing as well as they could to show their management.

(This might be subject to some of the fake news that we have been getting in Florida this winter however,,,).

(But at least I didn't have to listen to Millen state, for perhaps the 23rd time in a game, that the goalie made an enormous/fantastic/incredible/unbelievable save on a wrist shot from the face-off circle).

good win. the next three are tough.  I think how they do here will tell us a lot about the team and its chances.
