Rumour from fan590 is the Leafs have offered

Kadri, Schenn, and a 1st for Nash and a 3rd

Bluejackets want Kulemin in the deal

That's just a ton to give up. You could probably talk me into Kulemin + two of the other assets but all three strikes me as a pretty significant overpay.

If it's Kulemin in addition, I'd balk.  If it's Kulemin and you can talk them out of the 1st, I'd do it.  Quickly.

Kulemin, Kadri and Schenn was the suggestion, to which I agreed.

But I'm also with you here, Buck.  If Kulemin is in addition, another asset has to be coming back from them.

Why are we even getting a 3rd round pick back?  How about we drop that 3rd round pick and include some lesser prospect like Mueller or something.

So, the new "Antropov, Colaiacovo and a 1st" for Nash?

I'm guessing the 3rd is for negotiating purposes only, if this rumor is even remotely legit.

Oh man, all the Gardiner Gardiner Gardiner talk is making me dizzy.

Why is he amazing all of a sudden? Leaf fans have the memory of the family dog. 2 Seasons ago it was Schenn Schenn Schenn and how he'll be an amazing player and we cant part with him nomatter what. Now hes part of every trade proposal on the site.

Gardiner has played one partial season in the NHL and is doing pretty well. Fine. But debating whether or not you trade someone who could be a great player some day for someone who IS a great player now is foolish. I make that trade in a nanosecond.

In 2 years Gardiner could have fallen off the radar and be an afterthought. In 2 years, Rick Nash is still going to be one of the top fowards in the NHL.

As for the fan590 rumor, Kadri Schenn and a 1st but they want Kulemin, well keep the 1st and throw in Kulemin. I think thats an expensive, but fair shake for Nash. Call me crazy. Or reasonable, whichever.

I don't think you can use Schenn's development (or lack thereof) as a case against Gardiner, to be completely honest. They're two VERY different defenseman based on their style of play.

Im not trying to draw a comparison to Schenn vs Gardiner as much as I am that a few years ago the mindset was the same that Schenn was a young defenseman with alot of potential just like Gardiner is now, and that you would be trading "potential" for "proven asset". Gardiner could be awesome in 2 seasons. Or he could be back in AHL, who knows. What I do know for a fact though, is that Rick Nash is awesome now and has been for quite some time. Im not entirely sold on him being worth 7.8 million dollars per season, but he's not far off. I would not be the least bit surprised to see him planted in New York or LA and have an 85 point season. Does Gardiner have that kind of potential?

Make the trade or don't, I can't really complain either way. I've pretty much always found Burkes reasoning to be pretty sound.

That's true, but that's kind of how it is with prospects. You throw them into the ocean and they either sink, swim, or tread water.

Meh, I do think that Gardiner has more tools to become a better overall defenseman than Schenn (his skating, poise and calmness with the puck etc) and I think thats why he's probably a safer projection. Schenn wasn't ever going to be an all star, which I think is some of the problem with the hype that surrounded him at the time, but the comparisons were always Adam Foote, not Chris Pronger.

Meh. Just a couple thoughts.

You mean like trade away Neidermeyer?  Ooops... that didn't fall flat on our face.

I don't know why everyone is so in favour of dumping Schenn. He's 22 years old, and is actually the only Leafs D that hits consistently. I don't think he's hit his ceiling yet and is still learning.
And to the Nash is "awesome" right now.....No he isn't and has never been. Sundin was awesome and Nash isn't on the same level as him even tho he's paid like he is. I'd personally be going after Carter. Word has it that Grabbo wants north of 5 mill and truth be told.....Carter is better then Grabbo so if your going to spend that coin, spend it on the better player....and younger too.

Wasn't that just a pick that NJ turned into Nieds? Knowing Leafs they would have selected another Todd Warriner with it.

One significant reason Mike Richards might be considered more valuable than Nash: Richards 5.75 vs Nash 7.8 cap hit.

Richards + Maccarthur = $9 million
Nash + Colton Orr = $8.8 million

It's not all of a sudden to me, fwiw, from the get go his skating set him apart but in a pretty short span his hockey iq and poise has really come to the fore. He's made adjustments to his game in that time that are fairly remarkable both offensively and defensively ( not perfect but already he's logging top minutes effectively ) and I think it's pretty obvious the Leafs have something special with him. It wasn't that long ago we were questioning whether a one for one trade for Bobby Ryan for him was worth it, not much has changed in that regard.

Is it just me, but do players who look promising for the Leafs end up having huge flops?  I use to think it was having too high expectations, but it seems like the stats even support this no?

Zee

When is the Leafs press conference so I can hear what Burke has to say about this trade?
