Oilers feeling that 'what do you have to do to score?' feeling the Leafs had last year with these Panthers .

The Bruins are pretty familiar with that feeling too. Lol

The East is the beast. Oil finding out what the Leafs have to battle through. Where are their stars?

Once again, the oilers main issues continue to shine through. Yes they've slowly improved. Yes they made it further than the Leafs (because their stars actually showed up for the first 3 rounds). But their problem continues to be defensive collapses and shoddy goaltending. Skinner has to make a play behind the net on the 2nd goal against last night. People point at Ceci, but he was playing the goaltender to gain control of the puck and make a play in either direction. Once Skinner nonchalantly mishandled it, Ceci had to adjust and he simply lost the race to the puck.

Like Toronto, the question remains, what will they do to shore up their goaltending and defense. I'd say their defense is ahead of Toronto in the process. Their goaltending on the other hand...

So we don't have to see Corey Perry win but we have to see Sam Bennett win. Lose lose situation

Panthers did most of their damage off the rush, putting away goals on ~33+% of those chances. They backchecked aggressively and sprung breakaways by one touching outlet passes to different lanes, forcing the Oilers defense to sort and re-sort and basically never get set.

They did it with pace, and relentless pressure at both ends of the ice.

Babcock was a sociopathic bully, but tactically he had the right idea: push the pace, keep shifts hard and short, get behind the defense.

Like the Bruins and Lightning, the Panthers know how to take so many micro-infractions that refs have a hard time calling any.

Can't wait for the 'we gotta trade Draisaitl to make cap space' rumors ... [/sarcasm]
They have about half the Leafs cap space with 1 more player to sign though, in fairness, their situation has significant differences making it harder to accurately compare.

Both teams are lacking in goal and dmen talent to play defense.
But the Oilers D can contribute offensively better than the Leafs.
They scored twice as many goals as the Leafs D (48 vs 24).
I'm sure they helped but you can't credit McDavid & Draisaitl with all of that dmen goal scoring.

Pretty silly that Keefe knew that the playoffs were a different animal and needed a particular type of game, but for some reason, let them fart around in the regular season to rack up cap hit altering numbers.

This isn't even on Skinner. Those were all grade a++ chances because the Oiler forwards were late to nearly every puck in the other end of the ice.

Was expecting a better showing from Edmonton here.  Thought they'd take it this year.  The Panthers seemed to have taken their lumps from last year and brought them forward to this year to dial it in on the main prize.

Wanted to see McDavid hoist the Cup.  But I'll take Maurice finally doing so as consolation.  Don't give a crap about the rest of the Panthers team.

Three plus decades now that the Cup has not seen Canada.  Awful.

2nd goal(1st of that second period) is on Skinner. And it kickstarted the 3 goals in 6 minutes. That fumble took away the momentum Edmonton had. They were scrambled after that. It's very similar to our time with Andersen in net(and what Carolina just found out). If your goalie gives up a bad goal at the wrong time, it's backbreaking.

Not untrue! That bad goal just kills the goalie's confidence, and the team's confidence in the goaltender and they tighten up to try to be better defensively, but don't take the risks needed to break through for offense the other way.

How much money did Gustav Forsling cost himself by signing his extension with Florida in March as opposed to now? $5.75mil x 8 years was generally seen as a steal even then but he'd certainly get at least $10mil total more even with the Panthers-discount if he had waited.
