God I'd really like to stress that it's entirely possible Berube is our next coach, but that doesn't in any fathomable way make that 100% completely made up "rumour" true.

Quote from: Bender on May 10, 2024, 07:05:10 AMI caught the intermission and they were talking about how ineffective Carolinas drop pass on the PP was. Deja vu!

I've always very much enjoyed how much every team thinks their coach is the idiot for using the drop pass on the PP when every team in the league does it.

It's almost like it's effective more frequently than it's not. The issue is sometimes, it seems like teams don't have alternative strategies. When you know it's coming, it can be easier to minimize. When it's part of a mix, it's a very useful strategy.

Thanks for stressing that.
I wasn't into going down that rumour rabbit hole.
The media certainly has been floating him as a candidate.

He might be the tonic they need. He might not.
Guys who coach like he allegedly does tend to have shorter wicks.
But they tend to get results faster.

Would I short circuit my coaching search to snag him? I doubt it.

32 Thoughts is bandying about: Craig Berube, Todd McLellan (AC in Detroit while Shanahan played), Jay Woodcroft (Treliving knows his work)

Woodcroft would probably be the top available coach right now for me, but I don't know if he's the best one for the Leafs. Right or wrong I think they're going to lean towards ones with more "snot" as our GM likes to say. It's just after 5 seasons of failure with a coach that was maybe a little too chummy and hand-holdy with the players the pendulum is probably due to swing the other way now. I think of the available guys that would fit that mold (Berube, Evason, Gallant, others) Berube would probably be my top choice.

It has to be someone that the stars can't bully (I think Keefe had his hands tied by Shanahan there), but will also not be a bully himself. I'd like a coach that has a record of building up the youth component as well because they are key going forward (which Gallant cannot do).

I don't buy that Brindamour would come here if he does get let go but honestly his coaching record is every bit as eyebrow raising

104 teams have made the playoffs over the 6 years Brindamour has been coach (it includes those silly play in teams).  His best powerplay ranks 50th.

He's advanced to the conference finals twice but got swept both times.   His quotes last year after getting swept were very much, we won the series on paper and he was making similar statements after going down 3-0 to New York last night.  He also seems like a guy who hates the media

Berube hasn't really done anything outside of his miracle run with the Blues.

I don't know who the right choice is to coach the team moving forward but I don't think there is an ideal candidate anywhere

Bullfrog

I'm not entirely convinced a different coach will make much of a difference. Any change, though, often inspires people at the beginning. So, this might be a time when change for change's sake makes sense.

I think the playoff team was starting to look like something made for success. Totally different type of defence than we've had. Knies brings an element the team has lacked. Lyubushkin, Edmundson are good defensive/physical guys, etc.

The team is missing a 2nd high-end offensive defenseman and a high-end goalie.

I can't see a different coach having much of an impact on the play of Marner, Nylander, Tavares, Matthews, Rielly. Drop Bertuzzi's $5.5M and replace that with a defenseman and we're on to something.

Marner is not the reason they lost that series. And let's not forget: it was OT in game 7. Who knows what would have happened if they won that? Maybe Marner goes on to absolutely torch the next opponent.

32T reports that Berube interviewed first this Saturday as the Leafs' search gets underway. McLellan is next early this week.

Gotta give the Canes a little more time for a post mortem. Like, until Friday.

Going after Brind'Amour is going to be tricky. His contract doesn't expire until July 1st and I have to imagine Carolina will attempt to use that entire time to get him extended. Even if Rod publicly declares he won't be returning to Carolina it's not completely crazy to think Carolina wouldn't let him interview with other clubs until his contract is officially expired.

So do the Leafs (or any other team) decide to wait on hiring a coach until then they can talk to Rod and risk losing out on their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th options if they can't sign Brind'Amour?
