Quote from: Bender on August 04, 2023, 11:44:28 AMGood player, but do we really think he's worth $6.5?

His previous/current contract is 5.1667M for 6 years. This is essentially the same deal/slightly less given the cap actually moving. It's a lot for floating around 20G per season but hitting the wrong side of 30 with his playstyle (and injury history). He did end up scoring more goals than games he suspended for, like I facetiously predicted last time he signed, so there's that.

AAV is fine in the short term, but, the last 3 or so years of this deal have real potential to look bad. He's already starting to break down some.

And the second shoe drops; David Krejci also retires

Edit: stupid rebrand breaks the bulletin board embed codes

Looks like if you just replace x with twitter in the url like it should be the embed works again.

"x . com" is now a censored/autocorrected word on the forum lol.

Nice, elegant solution to an asinine, manufactured problem.

A bit of an odd trade from the Red Wings.  One of Matta, Wahlman or even the newly acquired Holl is going to be a healthy scratch, and all of them make over 3 million. :/

Significantly Insignificant

is he any good???

He's 24, had 30 goals and 64 points last year in 81 games.  He also had 5 point in 6 playoff games.  I would say the contract is a little high, but that they hope he grows some more.

A lot of it will depend on if he's actually a legit guy or just a complimentary player who rode the coat tails of Point and Kucherov, two pretty good linemates to have obviously. I'll admit Hagel has a little more going for him (younger, better defensively) but this would be somewhat like the Leafs signing Bunting to a big extension after his 21/22 season.

Hagel's signing should definitely drive down Nylander's ask. Hagel has similar numbers to Nylander at that age and brings more heart to the game.

8 years feels like a long time to commit to a guy with one season justifying the price tag. Could work out, could be an albatross. Really, though, giving 8 years to anyone who isn't a clear core piece feels like a bad  move. Also, what's with Tampa locking up a declining roster for so long? Seems like a mistake.

Why? They're not in the same performance tier. Similar role though.

23yr old Nylander put up 59pts
24yr old Hagel put up 64pts

Equals = Same tier
