Not going to be GM elsewhere, so...

fun how they squeezed this out juuuuust before the Leafs' new GM is gearing up to speak.

There's your Matthews destination. Couple of seasons left of Crosby, Matthews over there next season to take over the mantle.
I Saw Jay McClement Score.

Pittsburgh could be an interesting project for him.

Wish I'd put a bet on.

I wish they had remotely anything we'd actually want for a Marner trade. But in any case, we can pencil in a trade for Matt Murray back to the Penguins.

Nice promotion. Wonder if Dubas circles back on Tulsky after reports were Pittsburgh crossed him off their list for GM.

So this is a pretty tricky pickle. They have a trio of aging superstars (Crosby and Malkin are still dangerous) and maybe 2-3 play and play wingers that mesh well but have reached an expensive tier, but after that, it's a barren wasteland. There aren't even resources to re-tool. The only advantage is Crosby and Malkin are on sweetheart cap hits for a little longer. The only UFA market worth exploring is probably the NCAA/Europe avenue as there will be lots of opportunity (to play with legends) and net some resources at the deadline if they don't work out.

Yup. Hextall and Burke left the Pens in a bit of a mess, to put it lightly. Not going to be a quick or easy fix, and there isn't much time left to take advantage of Crosby and Malkin, who will be 36 and 37 respectively next season. They're in a weird spot where they can't really rebuild with those two on the roster, but they will need to soon.

Pittsburgh does feel a lot like Toronto. They have a pretty solid core. They have a sort of big-4 up front with Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Rust. Their D lacks a stud now that Letang is a little older but him, Petry, Pettersson, and potentially Dumoulin if they re-sign him is certainly above average. Question mark in net with Jarry.

They have a decent chunk of cap space, more if Dubas can find a new home for Granlund and/or Carter. They have all their 1st rounders, so expect to see one or two of those get moved at some point in the future. Pittsburgh will basically be all-in for at least the next 2 years to try and get Crosby another Cup. There's work to be done but they still have contender potential.

Not a shock at all. I had a hunch he was angling for either a President and GM or President role, especially in Pitt as there was already a ton of reporting on that, based on the "streamline" tactic in Toronto, and this all but confirms that Kyle knew he had this in his back pocket.

Good for him, but his presser still makes me laugh.

I think they have somewhat contender status, but I still think the prudent course of action here is at minimum a retool and if not a full rebuild.

I think we can take a WAG at what was in that email to Shanahan that sent him over the edge.

Do we think he resigns Jarry?

The definition of a "retool" is pretty up in the air. I mean I could see them trying to make some changes but the end goal even for this upcoming season needs to be a Cup. Crosby and Malkin turn 36 and 37 this summer respectively. Clocks ticking. And if Dubas can get them another Cup before their retirement he'll be given as much rope as humanly possible to orchestrate a full rebuild after that (with them almost certainly winning a big lottery whenever it comes up).

Doesn't confirm anything. Saw a Burke interview a few days ago and someone mentioned he had a deal in place. Burke basically said no he may have known about interest but no way a deal would be in place.

I didn't say a deal was in place or airtight "proves" anything because there's no way for us to know without more details, but there's a reason why Pitt put everything on hold once the Leafs got bounced. I think that indicates heavy interest, and if we knew about it through the media then Kyle obviously knew about it and thensome. How frequently have we heard "tampering haha" in the last few days? Point being is Dubas knew something enticing was on the table, and once the details were ironed out he went for it.
