Brad Treliving is new Leafs GM

It's been an up and down performance in Calgary for sure. He wouldn't be the hire I'd make but I'm willing to give him a shot. I think he probably had to deal with an equal or more meddling board in Calgary. I also don't think he's exactly gunshy on a deal, so I think taking a chance isn't the issue, it's if he'll take the right one.

I agree that his results in Calgary are largely uninspiring, but, it's not like he didn't make major moves to try to improve the team. There a number of big trades, some impactful UFA signings, etc. He was definitely trying to win. He just didn't succeed. Whether that was on him or ownership foisting a coach upon him, or a variety of other factors is hard to say. I don't think he's the best GM, but I think his track record is being seen in more of a negative light than it probably should be. He put together a really good, competitive team in Calgary. If they were able to convert on their chances at even an average rate and got reasonable to good goaltending out of Markstrom, he'd still be with the Flames. Their xGF and xGA numbers were excellent (7th and 4th respectively). It's just that their shooting percentage was the worst in the league and their save percentage wasn't much better.

I appreciate your point of view.  Still can't help but feel that the garlic pan bread with cheese from Jack Astor's was ordered, and we ended up with melba toast.

Under the circumstances, it could have been worse. Can't say I'm thrilled or super excited.
It's not JFJ or Gord Stellick. It's not Sam Pollack either. I have mixed feelings about him.

They needed to get someone quickly. They did that. I like that he's got a month before July 1st to figure some things out.
Following a minor pro hockey career, he has about two decades in NHL management.
He seems to be well regarded around the league. Many of the Calgary fans still like him and felt his selection of coaches was his biggest shortcoming.
He's a good communicator with the media which, as JFJ could tell us, is important in Toronto.

He has a very short runway to a very difficult job. Fingers crossed.

It's funny how a team's success is on the GM, when we're talking about GMs. When we're talking coaches, it's on the coach. GMs are only one small part of the team. They may do the best job ever and if the other pieces don't pull their weight, it's not the GM's fault.  It seems clear to me that Sutter was the problem in Calgary last year at least.

The more I think about this, the more I see Treliving not being the sexy pick, but the safe pick.  Hope he is able to get this team to take the next step.

Given what I've read and heard so far, MLSE wants to run it back with the same group (but are shielding themselves from the backlash by dropping Dubas).

Can you imagine the circus if Dubas kept Keefe and didn't make a move on the core this offseason?

But now, with Treliving, a vaunted Hockey Man with great relationships up and down the organizations within the league, it just makes no sense to blow up the core and fire a coach before he even sees what he has.

I don't think the firing has anything to do with family or commitment or autonomy. It's "I would consider anything with our group that would allow us a better chance to win the Stanley Cup. I would take nothing off the table at all".

One thing we will probably notice more in the next few years, is that Dubas was a proponent of 'failing fast', while Treliving has a history of holding onto poorly aged deals for too long, resulting in so many buyouts.

I see him wanting to make a big swing while also not moving any of the big-4... which yes goes without saying is going to be pretty tricky.

I really have a hard time believing Dubas wasn't renewed because he said he'd do anything to help the team. Morbidly I'm waiting for Shanny to be fired to get the full expose now, but I just don't feel like that's likely as it's just a routine thing that many GMs say, just Kyle finally said it out loud.

That was probably the topic of the Wednesday meeting after locker cleanout: what can this roster actually offer to improve? Aside from sewering your relationship with Tavares, moving Marner before July 1 is the only real long-term answer.

I enjoy his aw shucks approach so far. He's saying a lot of the right things and I can see why Shanahan picked Treliving.
