Huberdeau turns 30 in a few days and is just about to start an 8 year deal with a NMC for $10.5M/year.  What's Pridham supposed to do in that type of scenario except say "yeah, don't do that"

Quote from: Bender on May 31, 2023, 11:49:19 AMI think Calgary isn't nearly as bad a team as last year's record indicates.

I mean it's funny to think that they actually finished with more points (well 1 more point) than Florida did. 2nd best CF in the league, 3rd best xGF% , 2nd worst sv%, 2nd worst PDO. If Huberdeau and Markstrom don't completely sh%t the bed this season they're a playoff team with the potential to make some noise in a weak Western conference.

I'm doom and glooming a little bit about how we got here but Treliving isn't a horrible GM, and the Tkachuk/Gaudreau stuff shouldn't fall entirely on him either.

It depends what the other trade options were.

I mean really. Markstrom being normal Markstrom and they're easily in the playoffs. I do think there was also an element of "it friging sucks here" under Sutter. I always knew he wasn't a fun coach but once he threw Pelletier under the bus for no reason I knew it was way worse than that, he's just a straight up jerk.

I think this idea Pridham is some kind of cap magician that can do amazing things that no one else can is overblown.

Pridham's cap/CBA knowledge was unique in 2014. Most teams have a "cap guy" like him now though.

Quote from: Joe on May 31, 2023, 08:46:55 AMSo excited to bring in the guy who gave Kadri a ridiculous contract, lost their young superstar for "reasons" and bungled signing their longtime star UFA player.

I'm really starting to think Shanahan may be a bit of a lunkhead.

I'm going to say having to stay in Calgary was the biggest factor for those moves. Gaudreau wanted to be closer to home and Tkachuk wanted to be not in Calgary. After that, Kadri was the best available UFA that could plug the holes left by those two wanting to not be in Cowtown. I don't put too much on Treliving there.

I'm pretty sure Tkachuk had said he would have signed long term but the team would only offer him a bridge contract.

I'm telling you this guy is going to come in and make a terrible trade for nylander and somehow mess up the Matthews negotiation.

No one is perfect, but this whole Dubas thing is stupid. I feel this team is going to regress to Burke level mismanagement.

Because Dubas really did a masterful job at drafting, the big 3 contracts and winning playoff rounds. I'm willing to see how he does, but the implication that Dubas was some kind of GM genius in comparison that couldn't make mistakes on the big 3s second deals is ridiculous. Matthews can walk with or without Dubas, it's entirely his choice, and if Dubas were a great GM this contract expiry wouldn't even be happening right now.

This is why I've pretty much stopped posting here and have been rapidly losing interest in the leafs and discussing them.

Seriously. "Winning rounds"?

And I never said or even came close to implying anything about him being a "genius".

I mean, Dubas was Shanahans hire. He literally plucked him from the Soo and dumped Lou when Kyle could've walked. I'm not defending this move but it's kind of hilarious the level of "I agree with this so he's smart, I disagree with this so he's stupid."

I think you'd know me well enough that I'm not a knee jerk reaction type of person.

Absolutely Shanahan deserves all the credit for finding, grooming and promoting Dubas.

But this fallout that's happening feels very old school hockey mentality and I'm left with an uneasy feeling about it.

Any decent CPA can manage the cap.

Pridham's value, I would hope after shadowing Dubas for the past 4 seasons, is that he's more than just a "cap guy" now. Although that's tough to say for sure since it's literally all we know about him.

I gotta say, Shanahan seems to have a type.

Fine, I'll go in a different direction. I don't think Dubas would fare any better or much differently, and I don't understand why Treliving automatically means Burke level mismanagement.

Over the last 5 years both teams made it out of the first round once.  The Leafs are averaging about 7 points more a season than the Flames despite playing in a tougher division.  I think at best we are looking at a lateral move here with Treiliving.  I get why he wouldn't fire the coach right away but I think Keefe has done all that he is going to be capable of with this team.

herman

Cool he gets to inherit TJ Brodie and Mark Giordano twice in a pretty long GM career.
