I'm still pretty disappointed in how they handled the Dubas thing.

If they did this I'd be out completely.

They've been stupid. But they can't honestly be THAT stupid. Can they?

This might be where having corporate overlords as owners might turn advantageous, as they are not interested in the image hit that comes with siding with moral bankruptcy (see Dusty Imoo hiring backfiring).

The Penguins have passed on Eric Tulsky, so there's a chance...

Dubas left our cap sheet is very good shape, with flexibility to adjust to whatever it takes to retain Matthews.

We need to regain some team speed, and acquire more b-holes. Whistles go away after game 1/2 of every series. Let's be Team Fasstholes.

Would Corey Perry be considered a b-hole? I'm not sure that he's a fassthole though.

Definitely a b-hole - and the definition of a guy you hate to play against but would love to have on your team. Not sure how much he has left in the tank, though.

The Leafs clearly made a mistake in picking Simmonds over Perry that time. Signing Perry now won't make up for that though.

A Weekend at Bernier's

Quote from: herman on May 19, 2023, 01:47:46 PMGM: Tulsky or Pridham (Assisted by Spezza)
Coach: Rikard Gronborg
2C: Elias Lindholm
Which Core 4 to sacrifice on the altar of doing something: Marner
His trade return: Elias Lindholm, Rasmus Andersson

Edit: weelllllp

I'll skip past the coach and GM speculation and turn to the Core 4 trade proposal.  Admittedly, I lifted the idea from an online article, but the idea of a Carolina-Leafs deal centred around Marner makes a lot of sense in my mind. Marner for Seth Jarvis and Brett Pesce, anyone?

I definitely have time for Marner trade ideas, even though I'm pretty sure we lose the trade up front. If he goes a contender with less off-ice drama-llamas, he automatically does better there and the media here will fling poop at the Leafs for shipping off their hometown franchise player. If Marner stays here, they fling their poop at him directly, which he will ignore, but his buddies and dad will be sure to notify him of it all, and he is basically the worst version of himself.

Carolina sounds like a good fit: quiet media but strong fanbase, similar player types favoured, and Marner gives them star-pop that they only nominally have. I actually wonder if they'd be open to taking Matt Murray given they only have one semi-proven netminder on the books and their system makes average goalies look decent. They probably don't want Marner's cap hit ask driving up the rest of their team (Aho and Terevainen are due) but it's not everyday a near 100-pt Selke nom in his prime at a real-salary discount becomes available.

Aside from landing a GM, and signing Matthews, the priority is to get the most bang for the buck out of Tavares to bolster the offensive depth after Matthews' line. Yes it's a bit of chasing 'bad' money with more money, but Tavares is still a point-per-game player and his hands and hockey mind are not leaving anytime soon.

That means:
  • Get a legit 2C with speed
  • Establish an OZ playstyle that leverages Tavares strength of turning ugly pucks into surprising goals

The template ought to be Dallas' top line of Robertson - Hintz - Pavelski. They are a line that have trucky skaters on the wings, but Pavelski is a tip magician who is bucking the aging curve trend and Robertson is a sneaky quiet off-wing scoring threat. They both lean on their strengths and play within their limitations. Tavares has many similar elements to those two, but sometimes is a bit pigheaded about his puckhandling in open ice without speed. Roope Hintz's size and speed is the straw that stirs the drink and glues it all together. He's first on the puck a lot of the time and dishes to his linemates.

If Anaheim will move Fantilli for Marner I'm not sure they'll add any one of those 3 players, let alone 2 of them.

Lucic anyone? Or is Simmonds the same thing that wasn't working?

I thought we could see that when the Treliving rumours started.

On a 1-year, $1mil or less deal where he's playing 4th line minutes and not playing every single game unless his play warrants it.... he'd be fine. Or tolerable. I wouldn't hate it.
