More Marner Trade ideas for funsies

To Toronto: 2023 1st rd pick (2nd OA), Mason McTavish, Troy Terry/Jamie Drysdale

If Anaheim will move Fantilli for Marner I'm not sure they'll add any one of those 3 players, let alone 2 of them.

Fine, I'll take just the 2OA pick. Cutting off Marner's next negotiation is its own reward.

Value wise it's certainly interesting. Big Clark for Sundin vibes. But I don't think either team shows much interest in it considering where they are at their respective building stages. Anaheim especially.

Marner took enough grief from his last contract that out of all of them, I could see him signing a team friendly (er) deal. He won't be easy to replace- the leafs record with him out of the lineup is worse that any of the top 4.
 Nylander goes through very uninspired stretches, especially defensively.

I could see Nylander wanting to cash in hard on his last season results. I say he's the one the leafs should jettison for balance. Target a true 1st pairing defenseman.

PPP goes over the roster makeover mechanics (lots of space! but lots of requirements) and while there is a way we could just skate by with the regular moves, I still think a Marner move for the right pieces (primarily a 2C+) is how to push this in the right direction for the interim and long term. Splitting that 11M into two higher end players improves the depth without too much of a dent in the star power. UFA crop is poop and overpriced. June/at or before the draft is the time to make the move.

It's interesting. Not really sure what Winnipeg's plans are right now though. With Hellebuyck, Scheifele, and Wheeler all 1 year away from UFA status you'd think they'd be better off selling all those guys for futures (taking advantage of a weak UFA market this offseason) to try and do a quick retool with younger players. In that case, a Nylander trade wouldn't really make sense for them. If they're still adverse to a retool/rebuild, and especially if Hellebuyck signals he isn't interested in an extension, then yeah a Nylander (plus probably Samsonov) deal could at least be intriguing.

I really would like Hellebuyck, but I don't think it would require Nylander to get him.  A package built around Samsonov & Boston's first would be the starting point.

Honest question: why would moving off the Murray contract imply some sort of asset going with him to make it happen?  Would the Leafs not be in a position to simply eat the last year of his contract and send him through waivers to the Marlies?  If the unthinkable happens and Murray remains healthy and plays well he'd be eligible for callup or that much more appealing as a potential waiver pickup.
