Sounds like Dubas basically engineered his own way out - made demands he knew weren't going to met and would ultimately lead to his dismissal.

Quote from: Bender on May 19, 2023, 02:26:49 PMI don't think it's bizarre from Brendan's perspective, I view it as bizarre from Kyle's POV. The way Kyle handled that presser really made me think he wasn't into it anymore and could see why that could impact Shanahan's thinking.

I mean how is what Dubas said any different really from any other free agent (player) talking about how they need to discuss what their future plans are with their family before coming to any definite agreement. Should the Leafs end any contract negotiations they had with ROR even though they really want him back because he basically said the same thing?

Shanny gave him that opportunity. Dubas didn't need to speak publicly to the press about it and babble on the way he did. It screamed to me of someone who maybe held his cards tightly to his chest to his employer but let his heart bleed to a friend, except the friend is the press. It was such a dumb decision. Shanny said this wasn't a financial decision, but it had to be in part, because Kyle came back with a higher request AFTER that, after a contract had already been agreed on. I mean, seriously dude? To me it reads as someone who didn't really want to be there, but money talks, which is a bad basis for someone to stay if they also don't have their heart in it or their judgment could be clouded by pressure/stress.

Nonis, Lou, Dubas

Carlyle, Horachek, Babcock, Keefe

Shanahan

One of those things has been a constant.  I have absolutely no trust in this organization at the moment

This is Shanahan's last bullet for sure.

It's just very, very, very strange to me that we're going to have a massive change in our management team during quite possibly one of the most critical years of this teams history and it has absolutely nothing to do with Dubas' actual performance as the GM of this team. Like I said just a very bizarre turn of events during the past week, which admittedly both Dubas and Shanny had roles in.

Strung the Leafs along since the trade deadline?  Then at the last minute demand more money?  Kinda bizarre.

This is a tough pill to swallow.

Incompetence from both sides here. Dubas wanted back by all accounts and the Leafs wanted him back but...it didn't get worked out ???

Yeah. I'm very concerned we've taken some steps backwards in the steady progression of this team today. Man, I hope I'm wrong and bringing in a new GM is just what the doctor ordered, but I'm not holding my breath.

To be clear.  Dubas absolutely plays a big part in this.  That press conference was truly bizarre for a guy running an organization.  I would have been looking at him as unreliable after that presser.   But given that, the time to fire him was Tuesday not Friday

I don't have a problem with what he said on Monday. I can understand others thinking otherwise but that's just me. Having a framework for a new contract completed last weekend and then asking for a presumably hefty increase on Thursday is a pretty odd move on Dubas' part though (assuming that Shanny is being 100% truthful regarding that).

I'm surprised about that too. It's a pressure tactic on Dubas's part. Announce to the media you need time to think about whether or not you want the position, and then when the team says they need a signature now, up the ante.

Circumstances clearly changed for him in that time - professional, personal, and/or both - and he was only willing to stay for a position that wasn't available. It happens.

Quote from: L K on May 19, 2023, 01:29:09 PMObviously who the new GM is going to really determine how I feel about this.  On the surface I'm not thrilled but it's not entirely unexpected or undeserved.

That presser on Monday didn't sound like a guy ready to go through the grind again

The autonomy stuff makes you wonder what he did/didn't want to do at times.  Shanahan sitting through multiple GMs with nothing to show for it.  The Shanaplan has been more of a bust in my mind and I hope he's the guy facing criticism moving forward

And why do we never hear from him? I have found this bizarre for quite a while how he never makes himself available for an interview (that I have seen) to hear how everything is going in his world.  The most we get is an occasional 'statement'. Since the idea of the Shanaplan, which I recall as a 5 year plan, he has sat back in the shadows - and I really am not sure on his overall thoughts on how to build a winning team.

Just watched the presser. What the hell was in that email from Kyle?
