Well, at least I can say that I watched Denis Malgin's final game as a Leaf.

Hunt seems kinda like a budget ZAR, which would be good if we didn't already have a budget ZAR in Joey Anderson (and also the actual ZAR). Really don't get this one that much.

We needed to de-skill a little.  Don't want to demoralize the rest of the league, it's bad for the gate.

Hunt's a pretty standard 4th liner, but Malgin was obviously not adding anything. I great this with a hearty meh.

So all we've done is traded Malgin for almost the same production (<5 pts) but switched hands and went more defensive and snarly.

Essentially, if Malgin couldn't keep up on the Leafs top-6, might as well sub that roster slot with someone suited to bottom-6 and give him a chance on a team in need of scoring depth.

Is there a Kerfoot trade coming before the roster freeze? This feels like a Leivo move.

I think it mostly just bugs me that this continues the trend of the Leafs believing the bottom-6 should consist solely of defensive/grinder types. This is essentially a 2008 Brian Burke mentality with a little bit less truculence.

Malgin might not have been putting up points but he was the only player in the bottom-6 that seemed to be somewhat consistently pushing the pace offensively.

He sort of does it a bit differently than Burke-style. He looks like a modern-hockey time waster. But I do get what you're saying. Keefe is really into killing the clock when it's not a Matthews/Tavares line on the ice.

So trade Mason Marchment for Malgin, trade Malgin for a lesser Mason Marchment. Makes perfect sense.

I think what makes the most sense is looking at trades with the benefit of four years of hindsight.  I love when that happens.
