3-on-3 goals for/against stats since 20/21:

                    TOI   GF   GA
Matthews39910
Rielly35610
Marner2948
Tavares2647
Nylander2444

Not gonna lie, I would have expected better numbers than those. Matthews and Marner have been on for more goals against than any other forward in the league during 3-on-3. Seth Jones is the only player with more goals against with 12 (in 69 minutes though). Marner, Tavares, and Matthews are all in the bottom-5 of GA/60 among forwards with 20+ 3-on-3 minutes.

Good news is we don't have 3 on 3 OT in the playoffs so we should be fine
I Saw Jay McClement Score.

QuoteI want to begin with this stat, which I thought was remarkable: Over the last three seasons, with the trio of Morgan Rielly, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner on the ice in three-on-three overtime, the Leafs have been outscored by a whopping 8-1 margin.

[...]

When Matthews and William Nylander have been on the ice together, the Leafs have four OT game-winners and zero against over the past three seasons.

Thanks for that Herman. Numbers don't surprise me what does is Keefe's willingness to keep throwing those 3 out there together and usually to start the OT.

Putting a bit more oomph in our OT play could spell the difference between 1st in the division vs the dogfight that is 2v3. As long as our record isn't propped up entirely with OT wins (like Florida last year), I prefer picking up more of those points.

The strategy against Matthews-Marner is to hold the puck and wait them out until they're at the end of their shift.

I know Keefe not gonna, but all that space is very enticing for me to see what Engvall could cook up.

I'd be rewarding Malgin if Marner didn't pooch it immediately.

It's not too surprising. Giving that much room for an NHLer minimizes the skill difference a bit. You generally don't need to thread a pass through a needle in 3-on-3.

Rob

Maybe the Leafs should try two goalies and two skaters (both D men) in OT.
