Just wondering about everyones take on Tim's comments on the Tim & Friends episode today. In regards to Matthews incident with Konecny yesterday and how he defended himself. I'm split on the incident. Everyone knows my feeling on how soft this team is. I don't expect Matthews to drop his gloves but slashing at a guy and standing around with that smirk on his face I don't care for. Skate away for heavens sake. Same smirk when he got rag dolled around by Chariot in a game against the Habs. Getting challenged as Tim said by a feisty 170 lb guy and with that response. I know no-one wants to see a star possibly get injured but there comes a time when you have to defend yourself.

The time to defend yourself isn't when you are up 5-2 late in the 3rd.   I have no interest in Matthews showing how tough he can be at that point.  Absolutely nothing to gain and Gio's tackle honestly creates more positive elements than if Matthews fought Koneckny

I thought it was one of those ideal scenarios when the whole team gets riled up and brought a bit closer together fighting (literally) a bit of adversity.

Could be a turning point.

As for the specific Matthews bot, no real issues with it. In fact that smirk probably riled up Konecny more which led to the wider team getting involved.

I do remember Crosby dropping the gloves at one or two points early in his career but I don't really want to see that, especially from a guy whose wrist has history.
I Saw Jay McClement Score.

Guilt Trip

I loved that he laughed at him. Matthews has nothing to prove and doesn't need to drop the mitts.

One bad punch can mean a broken hand which can mean a lengthy absence and, if you're unlucky, chronic problems. The idea that you'd risk that with a talent like Matthews at the end of a game against a garbage team is ridiculous.

And for what? So a middle 6 winger like Konecny learns a lesson? Who gives a carp.
I wish to hell I'd never said "Winning isn't everything it's the only thing". What I believe is, if you go out on a football field, or any endeavour in life, and you leave every fibre of what you have on the field, then you've won.

I'll give Konceny a carp. Dried and salted so it will be all salty like him.

I have to ask... Who the hell is Mike Rupp?  Everyone knows who Auston Matthews is. But a washed-up never-was commenting on a bonafide star?  The irony.

He 100% listened to the Kyper/Bourne show today.

Rupp is the hacker.  I deduced this using my Big Brain.

I'm not sure who listens to Rupp when he comes on the NHL channel on Sirius but he's a meathead. He's the same guy that was upset that they were going to take away crosschecking in front of the net because "how are D going to defend the net if they can't cross check?"

Only in Toronto would this garbage take be a narrative.

I saw Rupp's comments and some headlines so I started hunting down video of the game looking for what happened. Still haven't found anything that is worth talking about let alone talking about with such vigor.

The only people Matthews should fighting are his equals - the McDavids, Crosbys and MacKinnon's of the world.  Otherwise the other team would have the advantage with Matthews being in the box for 5 minutes.  He shouldn't be wasting his time with the Konecnys of the world, and has a team more than willing to step up for him.

bustaheims

If Matthews goes his whole career without a real fight, I'm perfectly happy with that. Last thing he needs is a broken hand or wrist, a concussion, or any of the other injuries that happen so easily as part of a fight.

Also, as louisstamos points out, don't want him in the box for 5+ minutes. That doesn't help the Leafs in the slightest.
