Quote from: L K on October 24, 2022, 11:42:01 PMThe important thing when having a 6 on 4 powerplay is to make short and slow passes back and forth that don't force the defenders to adjust their position at all.

Also put your best shooter as far away from the net as possible.

That's 100% what I was thinking. Why is Matthews taking low percentage point shots that don't even lead to rebound chances?

Answer: Keefe is not a very good coach.

But the way to get around that is to sweep your screens across the slot timed with your shot attempts. Not sending static players into the house.

It's amazing how often they stand around on PPs.

Yeah what the heck was with Matthews playing the point and taking slapshots tonight.  I don't really get that strategy.

They've done this setup for the past three games to get Matthews more looks now that teams are selling out on his dot spot.

Tavares' last tip goal was a result of this play. Extra benefit is it preserves his body from chasing pucks on the boards and getting banged up in the slot for PP.

That said, unless there is more movement in the slot from other players causing chaos, this is going to be about as effective as Rielly shooting from back there.

Vegas was camping on our breakout routes all night* and even when we got through a bit, their skaters pushed the pace and forced turnovers with regularity. Cassidy put in some good work with the team and they fly with purpose.

* Nylander still cut through seemingly at will

Leafs didn't have a single 5-on-5 shot on net with Rielly on the ice last night. That's mind-boggling.

I'll say it again but this team has become painfully slow and not in a way that makes them feel physically imposing.  That's a bad combination.

I think they look slow because they can't complete a pass without bobbling it.

After reading this I went back and watched the last couple minutes with a man advantage. Wow is all I can say with this talented bunch on the PP. Doesn't surprise me with the comments probably the worse PP the last few years when we have a 5 on 3 so not much different than the 6 on 4. All they do is pass it around and waste time. You're down 2 goals and no urgency. Said it before in these situations they kill the penalties themselves by passing it around the perimeter. Horrible. Cassidy knows how to coach against Keefe plain and simple and Keefe has no clue to adjust. Team in my opinion has looked worse. Give them a couple weeks and we'll see but I'm not liking what I'm seeing.

QuoteNylander also carried the load in this game. He had a game-high 12 entry attempts and a game-high 7 controlled entries. While both he and Matthews had the same number of scoring chances, I think Nylander was the best Leaf (duh, he scored the goal) because he was able to create his own shots, something I don't think Matthews has done enough of this season.

Don't complain.  That's what happened when you reward your player with truckload of money when they haven't won anything yet. Dubas has to go and please take Keefe with him. Enough is enough.

Spot on. Said that when they signed the big 3. Their contracts don't look bad now compared to what others have been signing for but at the time in my opinion overpayments. You can argue what they are worth but all it did is put you in cap hell. And no I don't want to hear the Covid and salary cap comments. No one knew that was coming but not all teams are in a shitty situation like us and Dubas can really fine tune this team because of it. Signing everyone else's crap to fill out your roster. Better off bring up some young Marlins foe experience instead of playing the guys they signed.

And after all the passes around, it culminates with Matthews making low-percentage shots from just inside the blueline.  Has happened a few times this year.  I don't get it.
