I'm going to say Holl, HM Kerfoot

Holl was second in ice time on the D due to the PK where Caps went 0-5 and not on the ice for any goals against.

Kerfoot also did a bunch of the PK and made a beautiful pass to Jarnkrok on his goal.

Yikes, I must have watched a different game. I'm not sure what Holl's giveaways were but him and Muzzin looked scrambled.

MOTM - Tavares
HM - Giordano.

Show of hands, those who didn't think, but KNEW, that the first two MotMs would be Malgin and Holl.

Can't say I "knew" or had the slightest notion but I would say that your question reminded me that they both had good preseasons - beyond the stats.

Though Holl's preseason stats 4GP 2G 2A 4Pts +8 were pretty good ..

Both he and Sandin looked improved to me.

It'd be a huge boost if they can play well, and Liljegren continues his upward trajectory.  Washington isn't as dangerous as they used to be but they can still put it in the net.  And the D shut them down in periods 2 and 3.

I thought they were among the weaker links on D last year. I didn't see tons of last season. But from what I did see, Holl didn't bother me as much as he seemed to bother some - he did have some issues. Muzzin seemed to struggle to achieve his more proficient abilities but was better in the playoffs. Liljegren looked significantly improved - particularly with Giordano.

We have to start to be concerned about the age of the older guys. But Giordano has looked fine to me. Muzzin I haven't seen enough of but looked ok in the one game in preseason. Brodie I haven't noticed much (aside from his nice stick work) which may be a good thing.

I'm not positive but if I had to guess, I think the D is improved some. I also think the forwards have improved some. Like so many have said, we don't know what we have in these goaltenders. It might take us 20 or more games to find out.

MotM: Ilya Samsonov.
HM: Jake Muzzin, lovely assist and a great play to start the 3rd.

Marner, Holl, Kampf, Nylander, Tavares, Matthews, all deserving too, among others
