Anyone else kind of get the sense that outside of being very good at hockey Gretzky is kind of a zero?

yep.
I've never actually liked the guy much, tbh. And his schilling for online betting now just totally ruins any integrity he may have had in my eyes.

Meh, could be true, could be a shakedown. Who knows at this point.

Exactly the betting thing was bad, bad, bad.   He is also a groper with woman,  I have never understood men who think they can manhandle women.  It unfortunate that many of our top hockey stars are not the stellar gentlemen we think they should be.

Not a fan of Gretzky but you have a source for this groping thing?

I think that seems to be more and more evident with every passing tv ad/appearance he makes.

Part of the kid in me wants to remember him as this great guy with exceptional talent. The adult in me doesn't allow that.

That said, it's sadly true for a lot of these "celebrity" athletes. Sure there's the good guys, but for the most part, they come off like pompous a$$hats.

Living all those years in Edmonton during his youth probably didn't help

That's a pretty serious accusation you're making. Evidence?
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

For what it's worth I didn't mean it in the "he's not a good guy" sense and I can't make any sort of claims there.

I more meant like he was a pretty mediocre coach, was so/so at running Team Canada at his two shots(the 2002 team, although successful, still had some weird choices), is deadly boring as a commentator, his whiskey has pretty bad ratings on LCBO.com...I don't know. Maybe I'm being too harsh but when a lot of players from his era seem to be pretty good at running teams or whatever it sure seems like the best thing you can say about his post-playing career is that he's an ok golfer.

10-4 and perhaps I may have sent it down a path that it shouldn't have went.

In regards to "Gretzky" products, I do enjoy a few of the beers that are available.

As for coaching, is it a product of the situation/team he was placed in charge of or simply a matter of him not being very good at coaching? I don't really recall anything specific about him being a coach that gave me much of an opinion. I remember that the Coyotes stank, but that's been true for a good chunk of their existence.

I'm just shocked to read that a celebrity exaggerated the effectiveness of a weight-loss product.

I think it'd be hard to ever really separate how Gretzky did as a coach from the larger situation around him. Both in terms of the general lousiness of the Coyotes as a franchise but also because it would be sort of hard to deny that Gretzky, as part owner and as Wayne Gretzky, probably could have had more input into personnel decisions than the average coach if he wanted it.

That's why I think "mediocre" is fair. He got not very good results out of a fairly untalented team which seems about right.

My best friend was in a bar in Hamilton, Gretsky was there talking to a couple, he even did his grope with the husband/boyfriend there. He had his hand do far up her ass that he couldn't believe it and was so smooth that the man friend didn't even see it.
I don't like saying bad things about anyone but since Gretsky did the MGM ads and this gum thing, he has pissed me off.  One of the richest men in Canada (yes check it out) and he is hawking shit.  By the way he was also shamelessly flirting with my wife at a Golf event in Thornbury.  Glad I don't have a jealous bone in my body. We can't expect these stars to be any better than the next man.  I know a thing or two about Bobby Orr but I will never shame him in public.
