And guess who Vegas most senior available goalie for the start of the season currently is?

Minnesota's response to having a thin blue lien t-shirt was to say "we understand it has different meanings to different people".  Holy hell hockey really is just as cesspool of garbage takes

There's a whole narrative going around Twitter right now that Gretzky is no big deal and if he played now he'd be nowhere near those numbers.

Clearly this gen z hot take crew never actually saw him play.

I can only imagine the kinds of numbers he'd put up with today's equipment, training, etc.

The funny thing is this counter narrative that Matthews goals means nothing because in today's NHL there's virtually no contact so there's no way he could have scored this many goals in the 70s or 80s because for every goal he'd have 20 bruises. You know there era where every team seemed to have a 40-50 goal scorer.

I think it is kind of pointless to compare guys who played 30-40 years apart.  Exactly what would happen if Gretzky time travelled from the 80s to the modern day, had a 2-year training period with 11 specialist coaches to get ready, and then lined up opposite McDavid ... we'll, I dunno but I find the thought experiment pointless.   Basically, Gretzky optimized himself with the resources available and for the style of play that existed when he played the game. Relative to his peers, offensively, he dominated for a long time and more thoroughly than anybody else.

Conversely, though, he'd also be going up against players and goalies with today's equipment, training, etc.
