Maybe I'm crazy but I kind of see it the opposite way. In exchange for a 25 year old coming off a great season that they signed to a pretty reasonable 8 year extension, Florida gave up two pending UFA's who are both due substantial raises(Huberdeau's next deal, in particular, might be 10+ million a year starting in his age 30 season), a mid tier prospect and a pick that figures to be pretty low in the 1st round.

This only looks good for Calgary if you re-sign Huberdeau/Weegar and that costs...what? 15 million a season? More?

Contrast that with Florida where they get Tkachuk, who may already be better than Huberdeau, and have 5.5 million to replace Weegar who they reportedly wanted to move anyway.

Or if they flip them at the deadline. Could easily get three 1st round picks between the two of them I'd imagine. That brings the total to four. Not a bad haul for a guy that wanted out. Although it feels somewhat unlikely that Calgary will be that far out of playoff contention for that to be a possibility.

But yeah a lot of this will depend on if those guys get signed, but still a very good first step for Calgary I think.

Wonder if this makes Calgary more appealing to Kadri. Could go from Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk to Huberdeau-Kadri-Lindholm. Not all that bad considering the circumstances.

The problem there, though, is that if you flip guys at the deadline then almost by default you're getting picks lower in the round. Contrast that with what Chicago got for DeBrincat(who I don't think is as good as Tkachuk) with the #7 pick and the #39 pick and it's definitely a good return for Calgary but it's not blowing my hair back either. If you could have gotten one good young player like Kyrou back definitely with a first....I maybe lean that way.

I take this all day long if I'm Calgary. What a haul. Would never imagine they'd have gotten a Huberdeau out of a Tkachuk deal.

Yeah, there's probably lots of ways this trade could go well or bad with both teams. Huberdeau could re-sign with Calgary or get traded for a boatload or walk as an UFA. Tkachuk could hit 100 points ahead of struggle without someone like Gaudreau alongside him and go back to being a more 70 point guy. The loss of Weegar could also impact them a lot more than they seem to think it will.

Regardless, it's a massive trade that came way out of left field and I'm all for that stuff.

I'd take Huberdeau alone over Tkachuk. And they get all those extra goodies in the loot bag. Absolutely love it for Calgary. Wow.

Double wow because these types of hockey moves are hardly ever seen these days.
