Yeah. A 3rd from Ottawa and a 7th basically works out to more or less what it cost the Leafs to get rid of Mrazek.

Kind of feels like two separate moves that gained the Leafs very little, at best.

We lost cap space going to Murray from Mrazek.   I'm fine with the lateral move of those two in concept but not at the cap hit.  Our roster gets thinner without adding a player we should have any faith in being the reliable player we need in net

Bye bye Jack. Don't hate the deal. 50% would have been better but maybe they go grab a guy like Adin Hill. Season doesn't start tomorrow so we'll see what other moves he makes.
I'd rather have Murray at 4.6 x 2 then Jack at 5 x 5.

The deal details kind of suck
Term and age are the only improvements (Murray is also technically more sound). I guess Cup count too.

This is such a disappointing trade. Dubas should have just overpaid Campbell then.

I'm questioning the logic but at the same time he's the leafs goalie now so I choose to be optimistic.

He's younger than Campbell, will reportedly cost less than Campbell in term and value and has a track record as a starter.

So let's hope this works out.

Sure but with Murray you've got a younger guy where the question is "Can he find what he once had" whereas with Mrazek you were basically hoping he could do something he never had done before.

Of the two, I'd rather roll with Murray and the 900k difference doesn't bother me a ton.

If (and it's a substantial if) Murray regains his form, we'll look back on this fondly. Really, he just needs to perform at roughly league average level for it to not be awful.

Unfortunately, he hasn't been healthy enough to show he's still able to be that guy for a while.

I'm not too out of sorts with Murray, but I would have preferred more salary retention.

Yup It's obvious they didn't want Jack back at the ask...that speaks volumes.
I think it's going to work out just fine.

Mark my word another mistake. Dubas keeps trying to fix problems he created. Keeps trying to plug holes with spare parts no one else wants. Brutal.

Unless Murray rediscovers the game he had in his first few years in Pittsburgh, I'm not convinced he's an upgrade. Of course, Campbell comes with similar questions (is he the Campbell we saw in 2021? 2022? Somewhere in between?).

Other than Kuemper, there aren't great obvious options out there. They're all sort of in the "he can be really good in the right situation/circumstances" types, and that's not the best group to be plucking from. If Murray ends up being the cheapest (both in terms of cap and acquisition cost) and performs similarly, then maybe it's the right move - but, there's a lot of ifs and maybes. Unless Dubas really feels he can't land Kuemper or Murray is being brought in with double retention, little to no cost (or, even, some sort of asset included - though, with double retention, that would be unlikely) as a 1B/platoon/backup, I don't think there's urgency to get this done.

Game has sucked for the last 3 years and I'm with you not really an upgrade from Mrazek in my opinion. Oh well what do you expect when you try and fill important pieces when you've handcuffed yourself.

Why, as a leafs fan, would you hope that this doesn't work? Why do you choose negativity?

The leafs could have waited for free agency and struck out on all the goalies and be left with nothing. At least this way they have certainty.

And has been mentioned, the leafs had below average goaltending for almost half the season and still had a record number of wins and points.

Choose optimism. Be a freaking fan for once.

If in the end it doesn't work out well whatever, life goes on.

Half the post are for it half are against. Does that mean negativity? It's a forum and everyone has their opinion. I personally don't think we accomplished sweet f all by getting rid of Mrazek and signing Murray. Hell maybe he bounces back. As a FAN I'd love to see it but Dubas' handling and overpayments I said it 2-3 years ago we would be struggling to fill out the roster. Our 4th line and other important pieces have been crap because he doesn't have the room to sign guys that can play an important role and maybe move someone down whether to the 4th line or bottom D. All players signed cheap are players that are pretty well done or other teams don't want.

Nik

I said this in the GM thread but anyone who thought that "solving" the goaltender issue was a real possibility this off-season was probably kidding themselves and/or hasn't really adjusted to the new reality of NHL goaltending. At best the Leafs were going to come out of this process with a more expensive, slightly improved status quo. Absent having one of the better goalies in the league you're always going to be taking shots.

Dubas found and landed Campbell, I'm willing to bet he's not done with looking at the position now.

Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion and not everyone has to like it. I'm very much on the fence but instead of doing the I told you so and this will be terrible mark my words attitude, I, personally, am trying to rationalize why this might be the safest of the risks.

Obviously this could be a disaster, but this could also be, at worst, equivalent to the goaltending they got last season.

As to your overpayment comment, I'm not sure what you mean by that.
