This might sound like moving the goalposts a bit, but every line Tavares has been on also has trouble getting out of their own zone. They're basically shorthanded in the DZ with one less person who can get to the walls and break cycles. Maybe putting him on the wing helps (closer to the action) where he can leverage his stick strength and mitigate his skating weakness a little.

Yeah I'm not saying it needs to happen right now or even next season, but at some point in Tavares' contract I bet he starts playing wing a lot more. I think that'd be good for him.

I'm not really sure we're at the load-up stage of the plan yet, but if they did do something like that I'd be really curious to see how Tavares would do on the wing with M&M. He fits more into the Hyman/Bunting role that that they've had success with in the past, but also has the scoring chops that they didn't. You'd still have Kerfoot-Nylander behind them on the 2nd line and the Kampf line for checking.

If we're heading towards another "top line getting shut down on the road by Point/Cirelli" game though I'd rather see M&M split up though for a game.

I agree, for the most part. I think loaded up lines are something that should be a more regular occurrence in games - especially in tight games where the extra momentum or push is required - but they shouldn't be permanent. Maybe even a little more often earlier in games to see if it can help the team grab or add to an early lead. The team needs to use all the weapons available to them, and loading up lines for shifts is one they should take advantage of a little more frequently (and, to be fair, it does seem like Keefe has been trying that a little more of late).
