QUESTION: Do you think Marner feels a little guilty?

Now obviously we have no idea how he feels but just hypothetically if it was me in his situation I'd kind of feel bad. Like there is only so much money to be spent per team and he took such a huge chunk.

Did he deserve it? Personally I don't think so. How much better is he than Nylander? Not by that much.

Also because he took such a huge piece of the pie Kapanen and Mango are gone. The RFAs coming up on this team are going to get squeezed hard.

Which brings me to my second question: I wonder if guys like Dermott have some animosity towards Marner?

Now some might say it's on Dubas and I agree partly with that. But really Marner's camp had him over a barrel and there was only so much he could do. He couldnt let him hold out like Nylander because they were already so close to the cap.

What do you think?

Nik

I'm guessing not really since he A) probably doesn't think too much about that side of things and B) still thinks of himself as the third highest paid guy on the team so not someone who's uniquely culpable for the team's cap situation.

I don't see why Marner should/would feel guilty. Every top paid guy could have taken 500k less and the team would be in a better cap situation. I'm sure the other 3 don't feel guilty.

Why would any other player feel animosity towards Marner? He negotiated his salary, ultimately found a number that both he and the Leafs were comfortable with, and now makes that much money. That is the same thing that those other players did. In the case of Kapanen and Johnsson, I feel that they were both grossly overpaid as well and are gone based on their inflated salaries.

Marner scored at 1.13ppg pace last season. In a full 82 game season that's good for 93 points. The previous season, he scored at a 1.14ppg pace. How can we be really upset by this? By all accounts, he had an off year last year and still put up 67 points in 59 games. He tied for 19th in scoring in the NHL with Alexander Ovechkin(in 10 less games). If his goals would have actually came would we even be having this conversation? Please keep in mind that not only did Marner have a "poor" season, the team as a whole had a season that was poor. Tough to keep pinning that on a 22 year old.

I mean even if he took a million less we still have to trade Johnsson and Kapanen to make these moves happen so it isn?t like it?s as simple as greedy guy makes innocent Leafs suffer.

This is maybe a side question but for all the "we had to make the Kapanen trade" am I the only one who would make that trade any day of the week regardless of what the team's cap situation was?

Yeah the Kapanen trade was a good trade.  I liked Kapanen but getting a 1st (and drafting a player like Amirov with that pick) plus a decent prospect is a good acquisition, especially seeing how some players are signing in free agency.

Nope, to me that return was borderline shocking and a deal I would make regardless of where my team was regardless of the cap or standings.

The Kapanen deal was good and they probably make it no matter what. But if Marner is making the 9 million per he should be then they probably keep AJ.

My original post was more asking if this could upset the team...Create a rift.

I saw Dermot post a goodbye to AJ saying he knows it's a business but it still hurts to see his good friend go. And I'm sure Dubas is playing hardball with Dermott. He has no choice.

It would be interesting to know the mindset of the young guys lower down the totem pole trying to get paid.

Just something maybe to keep an eye on. I'll be interested to see if anything leaks out this off season for during the season.

Thing with AJ though. For what he got paid, he underachieved big time and 3.4 for a 3rd line winger is too much. Kappy move happens regardless of cap space. Another 3rd liner making too much.

I would have kept Kapanen over Johnsson if the choice was necessary, but I have zero complaints about that trade. I would also make that trade any day. I had 0 faith they were going to have a first round pick this year.

Even if Marner is making 1.8M less we don't have the room to have a 3.4M 3rd line winger if we want to have 7 defensemen and 13 forwards.
