I don't doubt it.  This has been going on for many years.  I knew a few guys that played in the OHL over 30 years ago, some going on to the NHL.  The stories they would tell were truly bat shit crazy.

It wouldn't surprise me. Besides what we already know about the culture of hazing in the sport it's always just seemed like a bad environment. The idea that a league of 16 to 18 year olds needs competitive balance to the point where those kids need to move away from home and have minimal adult supervision is, on its face, kind of a bad idea.
I wish to hell I'd never said "Winning isn't everything it's the only thing". What I believe is, if you go out on a football field, or any endeavour in life, and you leave every fibre of what you have on the field, then you've won.

What's even more disturbing is the fact that they're starting to do it even younger now. Prep Schools are now recruiting players in grade 9. My daughter, who's 11, was asked to start preparing for prep school when she enters grade 9. She's in grade 6, and they're already sniffing. It was very concerning to my wife and I. We told them thanks, but f off.

More fuel for the fire

It really is sickening. I heard these stories when I was playing. Some of them downright disturbing.
I never played in the junior ranks as I walked away after Midget, but it started when I began playing AAA hockey in Bantam. The fringe players were abused by the "stars". I felt it when people urinated in my hat and such when I was an under-ager on a major Bantam team.  Part of my dislike of the sport at that point was caused by these behaviours. I knew I wasn't going to the "show" so why should I take part in, watch, or fall victim to these behaviours.

QuoteOntario Hockey League Commissioner David Branch today announced that Niagara IceDogs General Manager, Team Governor and minority owner Joey Burke and Head Coach and minority owner Billy Burke have been indefinitely suspended and, together with the team, fined a combined $150,000.00. An investigation was launched into their overall conduct following the League receiving transcripts of a March 6, 2022 WhatsApp conversation.

Based on the results of the League investigation, it is the position of the League that their conduct is prejudicial to the welfare of the OHL as it violates the Leagues' Harassment & Abuse / Diversity Policy and also runs counter to the OHL's Onside program which emphasizes the importance of demonstrating respect for women through actions and words.

Four Moose Jaw Warrior players were suspended for the balance of the season earlier this year due to off-ice conduct (not criminal, but against WHL and team standards). It was so bad that the team's GM and coach also got a 5-game suspension along with a team fine (25k).
