what's the purpose of scrapping them besides it being an election ploy?  And conversely, what was the purpose of them in the first place outside of being a complete cash-grab revenue generator?

The license card and plate renewals (and by extension, the drive clean initiative) all drive revenues back into the government budget to spend on things like road repairs, infrastructure improvements. The Drive Clean initiative was also to help mitigate the harmful emissions that stem from poor car maintenance.

Aside from being an election ploy to attract voters with shortsighted/selfish 'gains', wiping $1B+ from the provincial government spending power means cuts to social safety nets and infrastructure retrofits, etc. People will pay more elsewhere, while Ford can help his private business buddies make more money filling in those gaps.

It's just another "free pizza for everyone" ploy by the government looking to get elected to school council.

Did he not just cut tolls on the 404?

Hard to cut tolls on a road without them. :P

He removed tolls from the 412 and 418.

Bullfrog

Am I the only one cringed out by the election office ads about voter registration? "you can do it in the park, do it at home, do it...." I get the attempt at humour, but I could do without sexual innuendo in my gov'ts work.

I know there are bigger issues these days, but can I just get a shoutout for the photographer (and the editor who selected the image) here for the Pinocchio allusion?
